Ο Αιμίλιος Μιχαήλ, Αρχιτέκτονας Μηχανικός PhD, είναι Επίκουρος Καθηγητής στο Τμήμα Αρχιτεκτονικής του Πανεπιστήμιου Κύπρου, διευθύνει το Ερευνητικό Εργαστήριο «Ενέργεια και Περιβαλλοντικός Σχεδιασμός Κτιρίων» (E&EDB) και είναι Διευθυντής του Διατμηματικού Μεταπτυχιακού Προγράμματος της Πολυτεχνικής Σχολής «Ενεργειακές Τεχνολογίες και Αειφόρος Σχεδιασμός». Πριν το διορισμό του στη παρούσα θέση, εργάστηκε στο Τμήμα Αρχιτεκτονικής του Πανεπιστήμιου Κύπρου ως λέκτορας, επισκέπτης λέκτορας και ως συνεργάτης ερευνητής από το 2006 μέχρι το 2013.

Ο Αιμίλιος Μιχαήλ κατέχει Διδακτορικό Τίτλο στον Περιβαλλοντικό Σχεδιασμό Κτιρίων και Ενέργεια στην Αρχιτεκτονική από Σχόλη Αρχιτεκτονικής του Εθνικού Μετσόβιου Πολυτεχνείου. Κατά τη διάρκεια των σπουδών του, τιμήθηκε με πληθώρα ακαδημαϊκών διακρίσεων, περιλαμβανομένων του Βραβείου Ακαδημαϊκής Αριστείας ΕΜΠ 2004, του Αργυρού Μεταλλίου ΕΜΠ 2004 για την υψηλότερη ακαδημαϊκή επίδοση και του Βραβείου Καλύτερης Διπλωματικής Εργασίας 2004. Η διδακτορική του εργασία προτάθηκε από την Σχόλη Αρχιτεκτόνων για το Βραβείο Καλύτερης Διδακτορικής Διατριβής ΕΜΠ 2011. Τιμήθηκε επίσης με πληθώρα ακαδημαϊκών υποτροφιών για τις προπτυχιακές, μεταπτυχιακές και διδακτορικές σπουδές του, περιλαμβανομένων των Ετήσιων Υποτροφιών Ακαδημαϊκής Αριστείας από το Ίδρυμα Κρατικών Υποτροφιών Ελλάδος για τα έτη 1999-2004, της Υποτροφίας Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών Ευγενίδου Ιδρύματος 2005-2006, της Υποτροφίας για Διδακτορικές Σπουδές στην Αρχιτεκτονική και το Περιβάλλον από το Ίδρυμα Κρατικών Υποτροφιών Ελλάδος 2005-2009 και της Υποτροφίας για Διδακτορικές Σπουδές από το Ίδρυμα Κρατικών Υποτροφιών Κύπρου 2006-2010.

Οι ερευνητικές του δραστηριότητες χαρακτηρίζονται από διεπιστημονικότητα και επικεντρώνονται στους τομείς του Περιβαλλοντικού Σχεδιασμού Κτιρίων και της Αρχιτεκτονικής Τεχνολογίας. Οι ερευνητικές προτεραιότητες του περιλαμβάνουν τους τομείς του Ενοποιημένου Αρχιτεκτονικού Σχεδιασμού και Αρχιτεκτονικής Τεχνολογίας, του Περιβαλλοντικού Σχεδιασμού Κτιρίων Σύγχρονης και Παραδοσιακής Αρχιτεκτονικής, των Προηγμένων Συστημάτων Κτιριακού Κελύφους και των Καινοτόμων & Αειφόρων Στοιχείων και Υλικών Κατασκευής. Έχει συμμετάσχει σε σειρά ερευνητικών προγραμμάτων χρηματοδοτούμενων από το Ίδρυμα Προώθησης Έρευνας, IPE-ΙΠΕ, το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου και την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή, Γενική Διεύθυνση Έρευνας & Καινοτομίας. Το αρχιτεκτονικό του έργο, με έμφαση στον τομέα του περιβαλλοντικού σχεδιασμό και της ενέργειας στην αρχιτεκτονική, έχει βραβευθεί σε ευρωπαϊκούς και διεθνείς αρχιτεκτονικούς διαγωνισμούς και παρουσιάστηκε σε διεθνείς εκθέσεις αρχιτεκτονικής στην Κύπρο και το εξωτερικό. Έχει επίσης παρουσιαστεί και βραβευτεί σε Διεθνείς Αρχιτεκτονικές Διοργανώσεις περιλαμβανόμενης της 22ης Biennial of Industrial Design 2010, όπου έλαβε το Quality Concept Award και της 12ης International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia 2010. Το ερευνητικό του έργο για τον περιβαλλοντικό και ενεργειακό σχεδιασμό έχει δημοσιευθεί σε βιβλία, επιστημονικά περιοδικά και πρακτικά συνεδρίων.

Το 2017 διορίστηκε από το Υπουργικό Συμβούλιο ως αντιπρόεδρος του Συμβουλίου Μελέτης Παρεκκλίσεων, ενώ από το 2011 έως και σήμερα είναι μέλος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου του Επιστημονικού και Τεχνικού Επιμελητηρίου Κύπρου (ΕΤΕΚ). Από το 2012 μέχρι το 2017 κατείχε την θέση του Αντιπρόεδρου Μελών και Δημοσίων Σχέσεων Συλλόγου Αρχιτεκτόνων Κύπρου (ΣΑΚ) και υπήρξε εκπρόσωπος του ΣΑΚ στη Διεθνή Ένωση Αρχιτέκτων (UIA). Από το 2013 μέχρι το 2017 διετέλεσε μέλος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου του Συνδέσμου Πολιτικών Μηχανικών και Αρχιτεκτόνων Κύπρου (ΣΠΜΑΚ). Συμμετέχει σε σειρά τεχνικών και επιστημονικών επιτροπών για την Αρχιτεκτονική, την Κρατική Αρχιτεκτονική Πολιτική, την Ενεργειακή Πολιτική, τις Κλιματικές Αλλαγές και την Αειφόρο Ανάπτυξη.

Profile Information

Aimilios Michael, Architect Engineer Dipl.Arch.Eng., M.Sc., Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Cyprus, Director of Energy & Environmental Design of Buildings Research Laboratory (E&EDB) and Director of the Inter-departmental Master Programme, Energy Technology and Sustainable Design of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Cyprus. Before assuming his current position, he was a Lecturer, Visiting Lecturer and Main Research Associate in the Department of Architecture at the UCY, from 2006 until 2013.

Aimilios Michael holds a PhD in Environmental Design and Energy in Architecture from the Department of Architectural Technology, School of Architecture, National Technical University of Athens, NTUA. During his studies, he was awarded numerous academic performance distinctions, including the Academic Excellence NTUA Award 2004, NTUA Silver Medal 2004 (1st rank), Best Design Diploma Thesis NTUA Award 2004 and Nomination for Best Doctoral Dissertation Award NTUA 2011. He was also awarded numerous academic scholarships for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies, including the Academic Excellence Annual Scholarships from the Greek State Scholarships Foundation from 1999 until 2004, the Eugenides Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship 2005-2006, the Doctoral Studies Scholarship in Architecture and Environment from the Greek State Scholarships Foundation 2005-2009 and the Doctoral Studies Scholarship from the Cyprus State Scholarships Foundation 2006-2010.

His research activities take on an interdisciplinary perspective and they focus on the areas of Energy and Environmental Design of Buildings and Advanced Architectural Technology. His research priorities include Integrated Architectural Design & Technology, Energy & Environmental Design of Buildings on Contemporary and Vernacular Architecture, Adaptable Building Envelope Design, Innovative & Sustainable Construction Components and Materials. He participated as principal investigator and/or project coordinator in several research programmes funded by the European Commission, Directorate General for Research & Innovation, Research Promotion Foundation IPE-RPF, University of Cyprus and the private sector. His architectural work -placing emphasis on energy and environmental architecture- has won awards (16) in architectural European and international competitions, including 1st prizes (2), and was presented in several architectural exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad. Aimilios Michael's design-based research has been presented and awarded in international architectural fora, including the 22nd Biennial of Industrial Design 2010, Quality Concept Award and at the 12th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia 2010. His research work has been published in books, refereed journals and conference proceedings.

Aimilios Michael currently holds the position of Vice-President of the Council for Planning Derogation Applications, Ministerial Council Appointment, (2017). He is also member of the Administrative Council of the Scientific Technical Chamber of Cyprus, CSTC (2011, 2013 and 2017). From 2012 to 2017, he served as the Vice-President of the Cyprus Architects Association Administrative Council and as CAA Representative to the International Union of Architects, UIA. Moreover, he served as member of the Administrative Council of the Cyprus Civil Engineers and Architects Association, CCEAA (2013-2017). He has participated in several scientific committees, including the State Architecture Policy Committee (Chair), Specialization Committee of Architecture (Deputy Chair), Energy Policy Committee (Renewable Energy Sources, Energy and Buildings subcommittees), Environment and Sustainable Development Committee.
