ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
Department of Psychology
FEB 02 - Faculty of Economics and Management, B125
University Campus
Dr Alexandros Lordos is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychology of the University of Cyprus. He holds a BA in Modern and Medieval Languages from the University of Cambridge, a BA in Psychology from the University of Crete, an MA in Counselling Studies from the University of Durham, and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Cyprus. Dr Lordos is one of the founders and the former Research Director of the Centre for Sustainable Peace and Democratic Development (SeeD), through which he established partnerships with several international organizations, including UNICEF, the World Bank, Interpeace, UNDP, and USAID’s Office for Transition Initiatives. He has served as principal investigator or co-principal investigator in projects across several countries in Europe, Africa and Asia, specifically in Ukraine, South Sudan, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Libya, Moldova, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Liberia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Nepal, Malaysia, East Timor and Cyprus. Dr Lordos is a former Senior Fellow of Harvard Humanitarian Initiative at Harvard University’s School of Public Health, and the Senior Advisor of Interpeace on Mental Health and Peacebuilding. In the past, he served as an advisor to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, on topics related to the ongoing peace negotiations. He has served as a judge in UNICEF's Generation Unlimited (2020) and ImaGen Ventures (2022) Youth Challenges. Dr. Lordos has participated in international competitions, and received awards, for the design of sustainable communities in the context of multiteam and long-duration space missions. Additionally, Dr Lordos is serving or has served in several national committees on a wide range of related topics, including the promotion of mental health at schools in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, the negotiations for participation of Clinical Psychologists within the National Health Insurance System, and the design of a National Suicide Prevention Strategy. At the University of Cyprus, he directs the Skills and Resilience Lab, while he contributes to the teaching and supervision of BA, MA and PhD students in the Department of Psychology. He serves as a member of the Council at the School of Social Sciences and Education.
I am interested in the investigation and activation of processes that contribute to multisystemic resilience, with a particular focus on conflict-affected populations, as well as communities in isolated, confined, and extreme (I.C.E.) environments. Relevant entry points for resilience in such contexts can include socioemotional competencies, family cohesion, collaborative community development, vocational skills, access to physical and natural assets, and transformative community leadership. My research has been investigating - through multilevel and inter-disciplinary population studies - how such factors interact to predict multisystemic adaptation, leading to positive outcomes in dimensions of mental health, social cohesion and sustainable livelihoods.

Building on insights from such population studies, I am increasingly focusing on the development of national infrastructures to activate resilience capacities in conflict-affected populations and among communities in isolated, confined, and extreme environments. These revolve around community-based intervention protocols to address individual and social determinants of psychosocial distress, family discord, and community conflict. Specific toolkits that colleagues and I have been developing include a protocol to build socioemotional competencies and resilience among populations that were traumatized by mass violence; a protocol for multifamily healing spaces to address inter-generational transmission of trauma and criminality in conflict-affected communities; and a protocol for community-based enterprises to consolidate mental health and social cohesion gains through sustainable livelihood strategies. Furthermore, together with colleagues, we have developed practice guidelines for multisystemic resilience and social cohesion of multiteam long-duration space missions. Evaluating the effectiveness of these interventions - through randomized trials, analog studies, process evaluations, and outcome harvesting - is an important aspect of my current work.

Emerging research interests that I plan to pursue in the coming years include the use of agent-based modelling as a toolkit to simulate community resilience; ecological-momentary assessment of family processes to assess the inter-generational transmission of trauma or resilience; and the development of cohesive and resilient communities in the context of isolated, confined and extreme (I.C.E.) environments, with particular emphasis on multiteam and long-duration space missions.
