Ο Δρ. Λουκάς Δημητρίου έχει ολοκληρώσει τις προπτυχιακές σπουδές του στη Σχολή Πολιτικών Μηχανικών του Εθνικού Μετσόβιου Πολυτεχνείου (ΕΜΠ). Κατόπιν απέκτησε Διδακτορικό Δίπλωμα από τον Τομέα Μεταφορών και Συγκοινωνιακής Υποδομής του ΕΜΠ σε θέματα βέλτιστου σχεδιασμού μεταφορικών συστημάτων. Κατά την περίοδο 2011-2013 υπήρξε Επίκουρος Καθηγητής στο Πανεπιστήμιο King Saud, Σχολή Πολιτικών Μηχανικών, στο Ριάντ της Σαουδικής Αραβίας, ενώ την περίοδο 2013-2018 Λέκτορας και 2018-2023 Επίκ. Καθηγητής στο Τμήμα ΠΜΜΠ του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου αντίστοιχα. Την τρέχουσα περίοδο είναι Αναπληρωτής Καθηγητής στο Τμήμα ΠΜΜΠ του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου, ενώ είναι επικεφαλής του Εργαστηρίου Συγκοινωνιακής Μηχανικής. Η ακαδημαϊκή και επαγγελματική δραστηριότητά του αφορά στη ποσοτική ανάλυση και σχεδιασμό συστημάτων μεταφορών, την χρήση εμπειρικών δεδομένων και προωθημένων τεχνικών και μεθόδων προερχόμενες από την στατιστική/οικονομετρία, την Τεχνητή Νοημοσύνη και της μοντελοποίησης και προσωμοίωσης συστημάτων, για την βελτιστοποίηση της απόδοσής τους και την ανάπτυξη πλαισίων και μηχανισμών υποστήριξης αποφάσεων στο πεδίο αυτό. Το κύριο μέρος της έρευνάς του αφορά στα ακόλουθα πεδία:

  • σχεδιασμός συστημάτων και πολιτικών προώθησης της βιώσιμης κινητικότητας,
  • σχεδιασμός και λειτουργία συστημάτων κυκλοφορίας,
  • σχεδιασμός και οργάνωση συστημάτων δημόσιων συγκοινωνιών,
  • την ολιστική προώθηση συστημάτων μικροκινητικότητας και βέλτιστης χρήσης της ενέργειας στις μεταφορές (πεζών, ποδηλάτων, σκούτερ, ηλεκτρικών και υβριδικών οχημάτων κ.α.),
  • εφαρμογή προχωρημένων ιδεών της επιχειρηματικότητας και της οικονομικής των μεταφορών για την ανάλυση αγορών στα μεταφορικά συστήματα,
  • διαχείριση συστημάτων διαμοιραζόμενης χρήσης,
  • σχεδιασμός και λειτουργία συστημάτων συνδυασμένων εμπορευματικών μεταφορών
  • συνδυασμός του αστικού σχεδιασμού με την λειτουργία συγκοινωνιακών συστημάτων, και
  • εισαγωγή και εφαρμογή αναδυόμενων τεχνολογιών στον τομέα των μεταφορών για την βελτιστοποίηση της λειτουργίας τους.

Είναι υπεύθυνος για 2 υποχρεωτικά προπτυχιακά μαθήματα και 5 μεταπτυχιακά στην κατεύθυνση Διαχείρισης Κατασκευαστικών και Μεταφορικών Υποδομών. Δημοσιεύει σταθερά και είναι κριτής στα πλέον έγκυρα περιοδικά του χώρου και συμμετέχει σε οργανωτικές και επιστημονικές επιτροπές σημαντικού αριθμού διεθνών συνεδρίων. Έχει λάβει ευρεία χρηματοδότηση από εθνικούς και ευρωπαϊκούς φορείς έρευνας, ενώ έχει υπάρξει και κριτής ευρωπαϊκών προτάσεων ερευνητικών προγραμμάτων.
