The Faculty of Economics and Management of the University of Cyprus (UCY) has conferred an honorary doctorate on Professor S. P. Kothari during the Award Ceremony that took place on Tuesday, March 21st 2017, at the Amphitheatre 'Nicos K. Shacolas' (Shakolas Education Centre for Clinical Medicine). UCY awarded the honorary degree to this notable personality in recognition of his exceptional contribution to humanity and the public good, through his professional activity and as a leading expert, researcher and practitioner in the field of accounting and finance.

In the opening remarks UCY Rector, Prof. Constantinos Christofides, who chaired this public meeting and dressed the Honored with the UCY gown, said that: "Prof. Kothari has demonstrated distinguished achievements related to his field of expertise, achievements that represents our values and serve as an inspiration to our students, alumni, university staff and community members. It is an honor for us that Prof. Kothari has accepted the award, joining our community." The recipient's work was presented by the Chairman of the Department of Accounting and Finance, Associate Professor Irene Karamanou, and the Senate Resolution was read by the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management, Prof. Andreas Charitou. In his address accepting the degree, Prof. Kothari said, "it is a great privilege to join you on this unique occasion in order to receive this extraordinary honor."

Professor S. P. Kothari is the Gordon Y Billard Professor of Accounting and Finance and former Deputy Dean at the Sloan School of Management of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His highly cited research focuses on financial reporting and valuation, asset allocation, explaining the diversity in international accounting practices, use of employee stock options for compensating executives and accounting for stock options, evaluating investment performance, and corporate uses of derivatives for hedging and speculation. Mr. Kothari received his BE from the Birla Institute of Technology & Science; his MBA from the Indian Institute of Management; and his PhD from the University of Iowa. He has also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Technology (Sydney), and a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Birla Institute of Technology and Science.
