Approximately 1300 students are admitted to the University of Cyprus each year (at present there are 4500 undergraduate students). Admission for the majority of students is by entrance examinations set by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus.
The academic year comprises two semesters: Fall Semester (September-December) and Spring Semester (January-May).
Attendance is compulsory. Eight (8) semesters are normally required for graduation, but in special cases the duration of studies may be extended to a maximum of twelve (12) semesters.
The programme of studies is based on credit units (ECTS), and 240 credit units are required for an undergraduate degree (as defined in the respective curricula). One academic year of full-time study should include undergraduate level courses equal to 60 credit units.
Each student receives planning and academic advice from his/her Academic Advisor.
Fees
• Fees total €1.709 per semester for Cypriot students and are paid by the State.
• Fees for foreign students total €3.417 per semester.
• Fees for students admitted from EU countries total €1.709 per semester and are paid by the State.
• Fees for students admitted from Non EU countries total €6.834 per academic year.

Students outside the E.U.
Overseas students who are graduates of high schools recognised by the appropriate education authority of their country, and who possess a
good knowledge of Greek or Turkish can be admitted based on GCE or GCSE or other equivalent examinations (see below), or based on the results of special examinations set by the University of Cyprus.
In the Department of English Studies and the Department of French Studies and Modern Languages, courses are taught in English and French respectively.
Application forms must be submitted to the Academic Affairs and Student Welfare Service from the 1st until the 30th of April of the entrance year.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR OVERSEAS STUDENTS
Department of English Studies
Three A’ Level subjects, one of which must be English Language, with minimum grades B, C, C. One of the other two subjects could be Modern Greek.
Department of French Studies and Modern Languages
Three A’ Level subjects, one of which must be French Language, with minimum grades B, C, C. One of the other two subjects could be Modern Greek.
Department of Turkish and Middle Eastern Studies
Any three A’ Level subjects from the following: Modern Greek, History, English Literature or Turkish Literature with minimum grade B in all three subjects.
Department of Biological Sciences
O’ level in Modern Greek with a minimum grade C and three out of the following four A’ level subjects (or equivalent): Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, with a minimum grade B.
Department of Chemistry
O’ Level in Modern Greek with minimum grade C and three A’ Level subjects: Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics with minimum grade B.
Department of Computer Science
O’ Level in Modern Greek with minimum grade C and three A’ Level subjects, one in Mathematics with minimum grade B, one from the following: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computers, Economics, Business Administration, and any other one with minimum grade B and C.
Department of Mathematics and Statistics
O’ Level in Modern Greek with minimum grade C and three A’ Level subjects: one in Mathematics with grade A and any two subjects from the Pure and Applied Sciences such as Further Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry and Computers with minimum grade B, C.
Department of Physics
O’ Level in Modern Greek with minimum grade C and three A’ Level subjects, two of which must be either in Mathematics or Physics with minimum grade B and one from the Pure Sciences (i.e., Biology,

Department of Education

Department of Psychology
O’ Level in Modern Greek with minimum grade C and three A’ Level subjects with minimum grades B, C, C. One of the three subjects must be either Mathematics or Physics and two from the following: Mathematics, Physics, History, Ancient Greek or Economics.
Department of Social and Political Sciences
Three A’ Level subjects with minimum grades B, B, C. One of the subjects must be Modern Greek.
Department of Economics
O’ Level in Modern Greek with minimum grade B, A’ Level Mathematics with minimum grade B and any two A’ Level subjects from the areas: Economics, Pure Sciences, Sociology, History with minimum grades B, C.
Department of Public and Business Administration
O’ Level in Modern Greek with minimum grade B and three A’ Level subjects, one of which must be in Mathematics and two in any other subjects with minimum grades B, B, C.
Departments of:
- Civil and Environmental Engineering
- Electrical and Computer Engineering
- Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering
O’ Level in Modern Greek with minimum grade C, A’ Level Mathematics with minimum grade B, A’ Level Physics with minimum grade B, A’ Level in one of the following, with minimum grade C: Chemistry, Biology, Applied Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Computers.
Programme of Architecture
O’ Level in Modern Greek with minimum grade C, A’ Level Mathematics with minimum grade B, A’ Level Physics with minimum grade B, A’ Level in one of the following, with minimum grade B: Chemistry, Art and Design / Fine Art, Applied Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Computers.
Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies
O’ Level in Modern Greek with minimum grade C and any three A’ Level subjects with minimum grades B, C, C.
Department of Classics and Philosophy
O’ Level in Modern Greek with minimum grade C and any three A’ Level subjects with minimum grades B, C, C.
Department of History and Archaeology
Three A’ Level subjects, two of which must be in History and Modern Greek with minimum grades A, B and another subject with minimum grade C.
Non-EU students who wish to apply to the University of Cyprus require a visa to enter Cyprus
Non-EU students must send the following documents to the Academic Affairs and Student Welfare Office :
1) Passport sized photo
2) attested copies of High School Leaving Certificate (Lower & Higher Secondary), mark sheets and other qualifications
3) attested copy of passport copy (valid for at least its intended course of study or for two years)
4) attested copy of the Police Clearance Certificate (valid for no more than 6 months)
5) attested copy of the Bank letter stating that the student´s sponsor has the financial ability to support his/her living, tuitions and repatriation expenses (valid for no more than 6 months). The bank guarantee letter must clearly state the amount of €4,000. Sponsor may only be father/mother/self. The letter must also clearly state relationship between sponsor and student.
6) attested copies of the blood test report (HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B, C) and the chest X ray report (TB) (valid for 4 months).
7) €85.43 visa fee (non-refundable application fee)
Provided that all the required documents and payment have been received until August, the University will submit the student´s documents to the Migration Authorities for approval.
Students are required to attest the academic documents, the police clearance certificate, the bank letter, the blood test, X-ray report and the copy of passport by the appropriate /relevant authorities in their home country - the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Health (for the blood test reports) in their home country and then further attested by the Cyprus Embassy, High Commission or Consulate. Also, the bank letter and the medical certificates must be attested by the Notary Public and approved by the relevant authorities in the applicant´s country.
The attestation process differs between countries that have signed the Hague Convention, 1961 (Apostille) and those who have not.
Attested documents must be in English, in cases where translations are necessary, these must be done by an approved translator and attested by the relevant authorities in the applicant´s country.
Applicants from a country where there is a Cyprus Embassy/High commission/Consulate must attend a short visa interview. Once approval has been received from the Migration Office, the student can then proceed for a visa interview. Interview dates will be announced prior to the beginning of each Semester. The following documents must be presented at the visa interview:
1) Passport
2) Original High School Leaving Certificate (Lower & Higher Secondary), mark sheets and other qualifications
3) Original Police Clearance Certificate
4) Original Bank letter stating that the student´s sponsor has the financial ability to support his/her living, tuitions and repatriation expenses. Sponsor may only be father/mother/student. The letter must also clearly state the relationship between sponsor and student.
5) Original blood test report (HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B,C and chest X ray report (TB))
6) Copy of University Acceptance letter
Note : that documents must not be laminated.
Also, the student must show 3 sets of above documents as follows:
a.1st set – Original documents
b.2nd set- Attested copies of all the above documents
c.3rd set-Plain copies of all the above with a photocopy of the completed visa application form in front
The documents must be in the same order in each set.
Arrival Checklist
Non-EU students are required to show the following documents to the Immigration Authorities at Larnaca Airport:
1) All above documents submitted during visa interview
2) Original passport with original Entry Visa to Cyprus
3) Cash and /or travelers´ cheques for a minimum of €1,600
4) Open ticket valid for return to home country.
Students are advised to contact the Cyprus Embassy/High Commission/Consulate to find out if there are additional documents that are required.
If there is no Cyprus representation in the applicant´s country, the visa will be issued from Cyprus. Students must submit original documents as listed above and a set of officially attested academic documents.
All foreign students coming from third countries outside the EU, within ten (10) days from the day of their arrival in Cyprus must complete the form M 61 which is available at the Office of Undergraduate Studies and submit it to the Population Registration and Immigration Department with the following documents:
- Certified copy of a valid passport or other travel document to cover:
- At least its intended course of study or
- At least two years,
(Any validity of the above mentioned documents is the smallest).
- Documentary proof of medical insurance. Non – E.U. students, must obtain private medical insurance for in-hospital and outpatient medical treatment in Cyprus
- Medical certificates attesting to good health, and including blood tests and Chest X-Ray
- Documentary proof from a bank in the Republic of Cyprus that the student has deposited a satisfactory amount of currency to cover his/her living expenses and tuition fees for the period that requested residence leave.
- Personal bank guarantee to cover repatriation expenses.
- Fees €34,17.
Accommodation
All registered students may apply for accommodation at the Housing Office in the Academic Affairs and Student Welfare Service. The University can accommodate a limited number of students in single, self-catering study / bedrooms in the Student Halls located at the New Campus, and in private apartments located off-campus. School of Modern Greek
The
School of Modern Greek aims to teach the Greek language to non-native speakers, nationals and foreigners, as well as to those who wish to perfect their knowledge of Greek. It offers intensive and non-intensive courses of Greek. For more information and application forms, please contact the School of Modern Greek (email: smgreek@ucy.ac.cy).
Registration
Course Registration is held the week prior to the beginning of each semester. Information on registration procedures as well as the registration form can be found in the Schedule of Classes, which is publicly announced by the Academic Affairs and Student Welfare Service every semester.
Course Changes
Students may add or drop courses in the second week of each semester. No courses may be added after this time, although courses may be dropped without notation on the students’ record.
Course Withdrawal
From the fourth until the seventh week of a semester only withdrawal from a course is permitted. This is noted on the student’s academic record. To officially withdraw from a course students must fill out the appropriate form and submit it to Academic Affairs and Student Welfare Service.
A student who does not officially withdraw, who does not attend the course or who does not take the course examinations is graded with zero.
Postponement of studies
In exceptional cases students may request a postponement of their studies. The postponement cannot exceed two full semesters.
Students who wish to postpone their studies must submit their application form together with all required information to the Departmental Board, who will forward the application with remarks to the Faculty Board for a decision. The Dean of the Faculty informs the student of the Board’s decision, which is simultaneously announced to the Chairman of the Department and the Head of Academic Affairs and Student Welfare.
Curriculum/Schedule of Classes
Here you will find instructions for registration in the current semester, the class schedules, and registration ad drop/ add forms. There is also information on class codes, course titles, day, time and location of classes, as well as the instructor/professor teaching the class.
If you have any problems with scheduling you must contact your academic advisor. Changes in the curriculum are possible only with permission of the Department Coordinator.
The curriculum is prepared each semester and is available on all University notice boards and the Academic Affairs and Student Welfare website.
Examinations
The Final Exam Schedule is posted on University notice boards and our website.
Where the majority of students and the professor wish to change the day or time of an exam, the Department Chairman must inform the Academic Affairs and Student Welfare Service, after she/he has determined that there are no conflicting exams. No changes are permitted unless this procedure is followed. Examinations may not be scheduled during the last week of classes, nor may an exam be given without prior notice. Final exams must be scheduled during the examination period.
Incomplete Grade
The grade of ‘incomplete’ is given only in exceptional cases (e.g., medical or personal reasons). Students who wish to take an ‘incomplete’ grade must:
1. fill in the appropriate form ( given to them by their professor) and submit a copy to both the Departmental Board and the Academic Affairs and Student Welfare Service after the approval of the Department Chairman;
2. complete the course requirements before the end of the following semester.
Any ‘incomplete’ grade that is not completed within the time requirements will automatically become a grade of zero.
The Grading System
The grading system is numerical and ranges from 0 to 10, with increments of 0.5. The minimum passing grade is 5.0. The Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated on the basis of the average grades for all courses. The final GPA is recorded on the degree according to the following scheme:
"Excellent" (8.5 - 10), "Very Good" (6.5- 8.49), "Good" (5.0-6.49).
Minor Programmes
In conjunction with the undergraduate degree programme, students may enrol in a minor programme (60 ECTS required). A minor programme may be completed within the normal duration of an undergraduate degree programme (4 academic years) provided that students are able to take on a heavier workload (i.e., more credits per semesters). Some courses of course, could count towards both the minor and the major programme of studies. Registration in a minor programme is allowed from the third until the fifth semester of studies. The application form must be submitted to the Academic Affairs and Student Welfare Service by the 15th of December.
Certification of Attendance
At the end of the 5th week of the Spring Semester, the Academic Affairs and Student Welfare Service mails a Certification of Attendance to all registered undergraduate and postgraduate students. Students must have this Certification to receive the annual education grant given by the Ministry of Finance.
The cost for additional certifications is €2 (for original certifications) and €1 (for each certified copy of the original certificate).
Student Library Card
All members of the University of Cyprus (students, faculty, researchers and staff) are issued a Library card, which permits them to use the Library facilities and computer services. The cost for the card is €12 (for students). Undergraduate students receive their Student Library card at the beginning of the fall semester. To replace a damaged or lost card please contact the Library (contact Telephone Number: 22 89 21 67).
Classroom Reservation
Students may reserve classrooms for extra curricular activities with permission from the Undergraduate Studies Office. Classrooms must be clean and ready for use at the end of the activity. Classroom or any other space on University grounds are available for special events only when these involve a group of students, e.g., students clubs.

Departmental transfer during undergraduate studies
Students who wish to change their major field of studies, where this requires transfer to another Department within the University, must meet certain criteria as follows:
- the grade the student received on his exam for entrance to the University of Cyprus must be equal to or higher than the lowest grade accepted (for the same year) in the department to which he is transferring.
- students admitted by special examinations must fulfil criteria set by the department to which they are transferring.
Transfer of department is allowed one time only, and all transfers depend on availability of places. Students may submit applications for transfer as early as the Spring semester of their first year until the beginning of their third year of studies.
