Software Installation Requirements [top]
Testing and deployment of Software in I.S.S Labs - Guidelines and Requirements
The following is a summary of the steps required for the testing and installation of software in the labs environment:

For better planning and unhindered operation of the I.S.S Computer labs, with the expiry of the Academic year in May, the departments are requested to state their needs in educational software that will be installed in the labs of I.S.S for the forthcoming Academic year.

The Departments must provide the Office of Lab. support with the software (CD or other media), by the end of June. All the software must be accompanied with proof of availability of the necessary user licenses, or a copy of the Software license agreement. We will not proceed any further if no documentation or proof that all the available licenses are provided.

Proceed with the installation of the software on a test machine.
-
In collaboration with the responsible academic, test the software and verify that it functions properly within the labs environment and the security systems of University Cyprus.
-
Resolve any problems that might occur.
-
When the software is completely functional on the test machine, the Office of Laboratories will proceed with the installation of the software on all the PC's of the labs.
Lab Software Requirements
When requesting software installations for the labs, please bare in mind the following:

It is ILLEGAL to install unlicensed software
-
You must supply the Computer Center with the Original Software Media and the License Agreement of the software you want installed (unless other arrangements are made with the Computer Center). Please ensure that you either have a site license, or enough licenses to cover all the installations you require
-
You must take into consideration the available hardware that the labs have. Please ensure that the software you want installed can be installed on the existing hardware. Take into consideration the following:
You can check that these software requirements are met by the available hardware by referring to the "Available Labs & Hardware" page.

Shareware, Freeware and Short Term programs cannot be installed
-
Please notify the Computer Center well in advance of your requirements. Bare in mind the following deadlines:

New software which is to be purchased by the Computer Center must be requested at least 6 months before the start of the academic semester.
-
Existing Software which is to be installed must be requested at least 2 months before the start of the academic semester.
-
Late requests will not be considered.
Lab Usage Guide [top]

The Computer Laboratories Equipment belongs to the University of Cyprus. Usage of this equipment is allowed only to the approved users.
-
All users must carry with them their University I.D.Card or their Lab Usage Approval Form, and they must present it upon request from the Lab Personnel.
-
Users must follow the instructions of the Lab personnel, whenever requested to do so.
-
Users must work in a quiet and orderly manner whilst in the labs, to avoid distructing the other users from their work, and to avoid damage to the computer equipment.
-
NO EATING, SMOKING or DRINKING is allowed within the Labs.
-
It is illegal to copy, or attempt to copy, use, or attempt to use, software and personal data which belongs to others.
-
It is illegal to use, or attempt to use, consumables other than the ones supplied by the Computer Center (printer paper, toners etc).
-
It is illegal to install, or attempt to install, software which does not legally belong to the University of Cyprus.
-
It is illegal to remove, or attempt to remove, copy, or attempt to copy, software which is installed at the labs.
-
It is illegal to alter, or attempt to alter, the computer environments as they are set.
-
It is illegal to try, or attempt to try, to open up or fix computer equipment.
-
It is illegal to use, or attempt to use, other users' accounts.
-
It is illegal to give out, or attempt to give out, your personal account password to other users or third parties.
-
It is illegal to install personal equipment within the Labs.
Failure to comply with the above mentioned rules may lead to account locking, account removal, or more drastic disciplinary measures being taken against the user.
Job Opportunities for Students [top]
Once a year, job opportunities are available to all students of the University of Cyprus. Students may be employed for work at the computer laboratories, as laboratory assistants, regardless of the department they are enrolled in.
Basic requirements include: Knowledge of Windows XP platform. Knowledge of Microsoft products (Word, Excel, Access) and Internet Explorer. Knowledge of Telnet and FTP protocols. Primitive knowledge of Unix (logging in to an account, very basic Unix commands). Knowledge of mailing software. The ability to help /guide people with computers.
Priority will be given to Computer Science students and students with advanced computer knowledge.
