ENGLISH LANGUAGE STUDIES (ELS)

This programme is conceived primarily to help students function academically and socially in a university setting.  Students engage collaboratively in the completion of tasks that are pedagogically and linguistically motivated to develop and enhance knowledge of English.
 
Students entering the first level of English Language studies (LAN100) are expected to be approximately at the level of the Cambridge FCE exam or at the BI+ (Threshodl) level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Course Descriptions


LAN 100   General Advanced English
 
This is an integrated skills course which has been designed to help students build upon their existing competence in English.  Students research, practice and deliver an informative presentation.  At the end of the course, students are expected to be at the B2 CEF level.

LAN 101   Academic English
 
In this course students will continue to develop proficiencty in all areas of the language reading, writing, listening and speaking.  A persuastive presentation is delivered at the end of the semester.

Prerequisite: LAN 100 or equivalent.

LAN 200   General Topics in Academic English

The course continues to develop the language and study skills taught in LAN 100 and LAN 101 at a more advanced level, using texts and topics of a general nature. Students undertake projects, prepare class papers and make oral presentations.

Prerequisite: LAN 101 or equivalent.
 
 

ENGLISH FOR SPECIAL PURPOSES

LAN   102   English for Architecture

This course is particularly designed to meet the needs of university students studying in the field of Architecture.  It aims to enable students to use the English Language efficiently and fluently during their academic studies and later in the performance of their professional duties.  The course focuses on activating all language skills through cooperative task-based work.  Tasks include delivering oral presentations (e.g. 3-D models), reading and writing documents in architectural contexts develping, academic study skills, listening, speaking and extensive terminology practice on topics such as constuction sites, plans and materials.

LAN   103   English for Biology
 
This course is particularly deisgned to meet the needs of university students studying in the filed of Biology.  It aims to enable students to use the English Language efficiently and fluently during their academic studies and later in the performance of their professional duties.  The course focuses on activating all language skills through collaborative task-based work.  Tasks include delivering oral presentations, posters, reading, writing texts within the context of biological science developing, academic study skills, listerning, speaking and extensive terminology on Biology related topics.

LAN  104   English for Technical Purposes
 
This course aims at developing effective communication skills in the English language. It focuses on technical writing and oral presentations, related to the discipline of Engineering. Students improve their ability to convey technical content clearly and convincingly in both writing and speaking.

LAN  109   English for Law
 
This course is particularly designed to meet the needs of university students studying in the field of Law.  It aims to enable students to use the English language efficiently and fluently during their academic studies and later in the performance of their duties as qualified lawyers.  The course focuses on activating all language skills through cooperative task-based work in a legal context: delivering oral presentations, reading and writing legal documents, academic study skills, listening and speaking about legal matters and extensive legal terminology practice.
 
 
LAN 111   English for Computer Science
 
This course aims at helping students communicate successfully in the field of Computer Science by teaching them the use of the effective reading, writing and speaking strategies.  Students will work on understanding texts relevant to their field, writing concisely and coherently as well as improving speaking fluency by delivering oral presentations all of which are essential tools in their academic life as well as future professional environment.  Collaboration and interaction between students will be achieved through various group and task-based activities.

LAN  201   Business Communication for Management English

The course aims at helping students communicate successfully in the business world, by teaching them the use of effective writing and speaking strategies and skills. Particular features of the course content have been designed to focus on communication-related topics and issues critical to students of the Department of Public and Business Administration.

LAN 202   English for Public Speaking
 
This course is designed to improve communicative skills in English in an academic setting through a combination of theory and practice.  In order to develop proficiency in verbal communication, students will complete a variety of activities, both indivicual and group, and be evaluated by their peers and their instructors according to task type.  Course materials are drawn from an extensive selection of current printed matter, online resources, video and podcasts.  One of the intentions of this course is to encourage students to begin to recognize the parametres within which their own culture operates and understand the important role cutlure plays when engaging in public speaking activities.

LAN  203   English for European and International Relations
 
The purpose of this specialized course is to provide students with knowledge of European and international relations through the medium of English and to encourage the practice of the English language in this specific context.  The course will include thematic presentationas, but will also be task-oriented.  The tasks will develop comprehension and production competence as well as intercultural skills.  Possible themes will include:  The functioning of European and international institutions, the political, economic and social cooperation, European and Regional integration, etc.  Through the successful completion of this course students will gain a substantial advantage for their future careers.

LAN  204  Business English
 
Business English give emphasis to English-speaking companies and commercial relations in the business world.  In addition to developing socio-cultural awareness, the course will focus on the acquisition of practical linguistic knowledge, for example writing a CV, speaking on the phone, negotiating prices, writing business letters, dealing with customers and suppliers, organizing a business trip, etc.  Teaching will be based on authentic documents, audio-visual as well as written, and a task-based approach will be adopted.  The aim of the course is to develop an immediate communicative competence in the business area. 
The course will prepare students for the Business English Certificate.
