TURKISH LANGUAGE STUDIES
This series of courses is intended to introduce students to the Turkish language and prepare them to use the language in their future working life or daily social activities. This course will help students develop Turkish language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing at a level equivalent to the A1 (Breakthrough) of the Common European Framework of reference for language learning
Course Descriptions
LAN 050 Turkish - Beginner level I
This elementary Turkish course focuses on teaching initial listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Turkish. The purpose of the Beginner Level I course is to provide students with a general knowledge of the language. By utilizing the materials, including audio documents as well as books and various texts, upon the successful completion of this course students can introduce themselves in daily life.
LAN 051 Turkish - Beginner level II
The Beginner Level II Turkish course reinforces the underlying syntactical structure of Turkish language that was introduced during the Beginner Level I course. Students are introduced to the basic tenses, grammatical rules and syntactical structure as well as practical vocabulary. Upon the successful completion of this course students can deal confidently with written and oral expressions related to simple daily life.
Prerequisite: LAN 050 or equivalent.
LAN 052 Turkish - Intermediate level I
This course is designed to build on the beginning level of Turkish language and to improve the knowledge of Turkish. It covers aspects of grammar and vocabulary as well as encompassing the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. The emphasis is on the improvement of the spoken and written communication skills for of students. They learn methods to help themselves continue to understand better spoken and written Turkish. The communicative approach used in the course provides students with maximum opportunities to use the daily language and practice their language skills.
Course Objectives
By the end of the semester, students are expected to attain greater confidence in their written and oral expression. Upon the successful completion of the course students:

can learn the meaning of new words and how to use them correctly. The focus is on useful words commonly used in communication in an academic context.

have reviewed basic grammar and expanded their grammatical knowledge of Turkish and can express more effectively what they mean.

can understand written and spoken language used in a professional context. Also they can provide answers to questions, like giving an address, making appointments, etc..

can read or listen to a wide range of authentic passages in Turkish and to practice summarizing messages the writers or speakers wish to convey.

can practice planning for effective writing or speaking by studying models of good writing and speaking styles.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to function at a level equivalent to the A1 (Breakthrough) of the Common European Framework of reference for langauge learning.
Prerequisite: LAN 051 or equivalent.
