Welcome Message
Welcome to Nanocyprus, the nanotechnology page of the University of Cyprus and beyond! On behalf of everyone at the Hephaistos Nanotechnology Research Center of UCY, its students, researchers, staff and faculty, we wish you an enjoyable and intriguing exploration of the nanoworld – that special miniscule world hiding into billionths of a meter (or nanometers) and even smaller fractions of a second. At that magic scale of atomic and molecular groups, the laws of nature manifest themselves in new phenomena and structures, very different from our usual macroworld, dictating unexpected, marvellous balances and order. It is by those admirable architectures and mechanisms of the nanoworld that nature, through its billion-year long course on earth, has achieved all its miracles that we witness daily, including life itself. In our days, those secrets are coming under the eyes of science (nanoscience) and into the hands of technology (nanotechnology), provoking once again the human mind to discover and to create.
So go ahead, join us in learning about the nanotechnology revolution that promises to change our lives in so many important ways! Come check who in Cyprus is working in unveiling its secrets and in building new nanodevices and systems through nanomanufacturing, and meet with the researchers, the educators and the entrepreneurs. Find out what they are up to, their latest projects, courses and applications they are striving to bring to reality. Join them in a virtual visit to our laboratories, and see what facilities and instruments they are using. Learn about all their new activities, and get involved! If you are a local in Cyprus, kopiaste - please take our open invitation and the opportunity to physically visit and meet us-the nanotechnology tour of UCY is our treat! If you are away from the island, remember that Cyprus has more than a unique history, culture and ambient to surprise you with on your next visit – put Nanocyprus on your travel agenda. We would also love to hear about your interests and experiences in nanotechnology, and possibly your joining forces with us in our scouting of the nanoworld – so please feel free to contact us.
Last but not least, we would like to thank cordially those organizations and people who make this cosmogony of nanotechnology a vibrant and tangible reality for Cyprus: the Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus, the European Commission and its Marie Curie mobility programme, and the University of Cyprus for all their support of the research, training, human resources, infrastructure and all other wealths of Nanocyprus. Wishing you a rewarding exploration or our nanoworld in Cyprus, and looking forward to hearing back from you,
Prof. Haris Doumanidis
Marie Curie Chair and Interim Director
