Welcome Message
About us
On behalf of my colleagues, staff, and students, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our department’s website. Psychology is the field that studies normal and abnormal behavior. Human behavior encompasses a variety of complex processes such as cognition, language, emotion, and personality and is a result of a multidimensional interplay encompassing neuronal function, genetic characteristics, environmental influences, and experience. In the past two decades, the study of human behavior has exploded by integrating knowledge from neuroscience and neurophysiology to explain how brain systems work to produce certain types of behavior.
The Department of Psychology, albeit young (founded in 2004) is a dynamic department with high academic and research standards. Our vision is to contribute to the growth of scientific research in the field of Psychology and our mission is to provide solid academic and research education to our students. Our faculty come from varied academic and research traditions representing the diversity whithin the field of Psychology. Faculty and students in the Department of Psychology run numerous research projects in different areas including cognitive science, learning and developmental disabilities, social interaction, spatial orientation, linguistics, perception, memory, environmental influences, emotion, life span development, and clinical neuropsychology. Several of the projects are funded by a number of organizations including the European Commission (FP6 funds), the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation, the Foundation for the Advancement of Scholarship in Canada, the European Research Foundation, the International Research Association, and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (National Institutes of Health, USA). Overall, the Psychology Department emphasizes a rigorous, scientific approach to the understanding of human behavior. Its programs examine the most up-to-date and comprehensive psychological research and theory and provide opportunities for direct student involvement. Our students have many opportunities to participate in resesarch projects conducted by our faculty, including projects taking place in the 4 Labs of the department: the Epxerimental Psychology Laboratory, the Νeurocognitive Research Laboratory, the Psychophysiology Laboratory, and the Social Psychology Laboratory.
Studies in Psychology are among the most popular fields of study at the University of Cyprus. The Department of Psychology continues to grow in student numbers. We have approximately 210 undergraduate psychology majors, 60 graduate, and 34 doctoral students. We offer an undergraduate degree, three graduate degree programs, and two doctoratal degree. Our newly revised undergraduate curriculum reflects the new trends in the field and is set on international standards as it offers students solid foundation on the science of Psychology. The three Master’s programs provide students with a broad understanding of the scientific foundations of psychology, as well as direct experience in research methods and psychological practice. One of the graduate programs leads to a Master in Cognitive and Educational Psychology (Theoretical), the second graduate program leads to a Master of Science in School Psychology (Applied) and the third graduate program leads to a Master in Social and Developmental Psychology (Theoretical). The two Ph.D. programs focus on creating new researchers in the field of psychology and therefore is two research intensives degrees, culminating in the doctoral dissertation.
Outside the classroom, our students have developed their own community, the Society of Psychology, where faculty-student interactions take place in both academic and social settings.
