Students enrolled in the M.Eng. in Petroleum Engineering have access to state-of-the-art equipment used in the study of rock properties and their interactions with fluids (liquids and aqueous solutions).
 
Ledra Lab in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering hosts equipment for the measurement of various petrophysical properties, such as porosity (Micromeritics Autopore IV 9500 Mercury Intrusion Porosimeter), permeability (Hassler cells) and capillary pressure. It also hosts a scratch tool (Wombat by Epslog Engineering) for determining the uniaxial compressive strength and friction angle of rocks, an X-Ray Diffractometer (Bruker D8 Advance) for the mineralogical analyses of rocks, an ED-XRF (Bruker S2 Ranger) for chemical analyses and a SEM-EDS (Jeol JSM-6610LV with Quantax 200 EDS) for high magnification microscopical and spot chemical analyses. Other useful equipment include an optical microscope and a stereomicroscope, ultrasonic pulse velocity equipment (PUNDIT plus and Erudite Mk IV) for determining the elastic properties of rocks, vacuum saturation apparatuses, sieve shakers and various compression testing machines (300 kN, 3000 kN and 5000 kN load capacities).
