Thomas Papadopoulos is an Assistant Professor of Business Law at the Department of Law of the University of Cyprus. He was a Lecturer in Business Law at the Department of Law of the University of Cyprus from 2016 until 2019. He received his DPhil in Law from the Faculty of Law of the University of Oxford (2010). He received a degree of Magister Juris (MJur/LLM, 2006) and a degree of MPhil in Law (2007) from the Faculty of Law of the University of Oxford. He also received his LLB with Distinction (ranked 1st) from the Department of Law of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2005). He is an alumnus with Distinction of the Anatolia American College of Thessaloniki (2001).

He was a Visiting Researcher at Harvard Law School, King’s College London and Max Planck Institute Luxembourg. He is also a Visiting Professor at the International Hellenic University and a Teaching Fellow at the Open University of Cyprus. Moreover, he is a member of the editorial board of European Company Law (ECL) Journal published by Kluwer and a member of the editorial board of European Company Case Law (ECCL) Review published by Nomos. He is a legal expert-country reporter for Cyprus law at the European Model Company Act (EMCA) Group, the Common European Law on Investment Screening (CELIS) Institute, the Covid-19 Litigation Project of the University of Trento, Italy and research projects of the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI). He is a researcher of the research project: ‘Corporate Governance: Sustainability, ASG/ESG Factors and Reputation (CORPGOVESG)’ of the School of Law of the San Pablo University-CEU, CEU Universities, Spain and of the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain. He is also a member of the academic board of European Banking Institute (EBI). He was a member of the Scientific Committee of the TRAIL training programme funded by the EU (Train in your language: multilingual transnational training in EU civil and commercial law – TRAIL). He is also an Attorney at law (Greece).

He was awarded the ‘Cyprus Research Award-Young Researcher (2014)’ of the Research Promotion Foundation of the Republic of Cyprus (category of ‘Social Sciences & Humanities’). This distinction was awarded on the basis of his research on Takeovers and Mergers and was accompanied by a research grant. He was the Project Coordinator of the Research Project ‘Takeovers and Mergers in European, Cypriot and Greek Company Law’, which was financed by the Research Promotion Foundation of the Republic of Cyprus (2015-2017).

He is the author of the following monograph published by Kluwer: ‘EU Law and the Harmonization of Takeovers in the Internal Market, 2010, Kluwer’. Moreover, he is the editor of the following book published by Springer: ‘Cross-Border Mergers - EU Perspectives and National Experiences, 2019, Springer’. Additionally, he is the co-editor of the following book published by Springer: ‘Weaponising Investments: Collected Papers on the Law and Geoeconomics of Foreign Capital (co-edited with Jens Hillebrand Pohl, Joanna Warchoł, Janosch Wiesenthal), Volume I, 2023, Springer’. In February 2023, his 1280 pages book with the title ‘Cyprus Company Law’ was published in Greek by Nomiki Vivliothiki publications. His articles were published in many top international law journals. He presented his research in many international conferences and gave invited guest lectures at many academic institutions abroad. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor (2015), a Lecturer (2012-15) and a Scientific Collaborator (2011-12) of Commercial Law at the Department of Law of the European University Cyprus. He was an adjunct lecturer at the Department of Regional Economic Development of the University of Central Greece and a Teaching Fellow at the Hellenic Open University. He was a part-time law lecturer at the Law School of the University of Buckingham, UK and a law tutor at the Oxford University Programme for Undergraduate Studies (OPUS) of the University of Oxford. He also taught at the Department of Statistics and Insurance Science of the University of Piraeus.

Additionally, he was Academic Student Coordinator of the Financial Law Discussion Group of the Faculty of Law of the University of Oxford. During his studies, he received scholarships from the A.G. Leventis Foundation, the University of Oxford, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) (Scholarships of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affars), the Despotidou-Tsagka Foundation and the Greek Foundation of State Scholarships (IKY). Moreover, during his mandatory military service, he acted as an assistant Legal Advisor (LEGAD) for the NATO Deployable Corps Headquarter at Thessaloniki, Greece (NDC-GR). He participated in workshops of the Technical Assistance and Information Exchange instrument (TAIEX) managed by the Directorate-General Enlargement of the European Commission.
