She is also a member of the Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO. From 2014 -2016 she served as the President of the Board of Trustees of the Cultural Foundation of the Bank of Cyprus. In October 2018 she was appointed to the Board of Directors the newly established National Board of Research and Innovation by the Ministers Council of the Republic of Cyprus . In 2022 she was elected Corresponding Member of the Archaeological Institute of America.

Prof. Kassianidou studied at Bryn Mawr College, USA where she did a double major in Chemistry and Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology. She received her Bachelor degree with a distinction (Cum Laude) in 1989. She continued her studies at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London where she received her doctoral degree on Archaeometallurgy in 1993.

She worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Institute of Archaeology, UCL, (1993) and in 1994 she joined the faculty of the Department of History and Archaeology of UCY and has held the position of full Professor since 2013. Her research is focused on ancient technology and specifically the production and trade of Cypriot copper through antiquity but also on the impact of this industry on the Cypriot landscape and environment. She has taken part and directed a number of field and analytical projects regarding her fields of expertise and has an extensive list of publications which include two edited volumes, three co-authored volumes and over fifty articles in peer reviewed journals, edited volumes and conference proceedings.

Prof. Kassianidou has coordinated a number of research projects with funding from the Research Promotion Foundation the latest of which is Pleicy: Water Routes In Human Island Dispersals: Modeling the Pleistocene Exploitation οf Cyprus (POST–DOC/0916/0185) which received funding within the framework of the RESTART 2016–2020 – DIDAKTOR scheme. The principal investigator of the project is Dr Theodora Moutsiou.

She has also participated in and coordinated a number of projects funded by the European Union (in FP7 and H2020). The most important of these was the four year project entitled “New Archaeological Research Network for Integrating Approaches to Ancient Material Studies (NARNIA)” which she set up and coordinated. NARNIA was a Marie Curie Initial Training Network which fell under the People programme of FP7. It consisted of a consortium of nine partners from six different countries. With a budget of 4.6 million euros and 100% financing from the Research Executive Agency (REA) NARNIA was and perhaps still is the largest funded project ever to be granted by the REA to Cyprus and the largest project to receive funding from the European Commission in the fields of archaeology and archaeological sciences. She has, furthermore, coordinated two Marie Curie Individual Fellowships: 656148 — PRENET — H2020-MSCA-IF-2014 with a budget of 151,000 euros and 750904 — GLAZE — H2020-MSCA-IF-2016 with a budget of 151,648 euros. She was also the scientist in charge of the University of Cyprus team participating in the MedSTACH project which was submitted to the Teaming for Excellence program on the H2020-WIDESPREAD-01-2018-2019 funding scheme. The proposal seeks to establish a new research Centre of Excellence in Cyprus entitled: «Eastern Mediterranean Science and Technology Centre of Excellence for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage» (acronym MedSTACH). It is coordinated by the Cyprus University of Technology.

Her research interests include: extractive metallurgy, ancient technology (stone, ceramic, glass, and metals), conservation of metals, production and trade of Cypriot copper in Antiquity, metals trade in the Mediterranean in Antiquity, the production and use of silver.

This Innovative Training Network aims at training Early-Stage Researchers to conduct state-of-the-art, science-based research on the provenance, use, and technology of plasters and ceramics, in pre-modern societies in different regions of the eastern Mediterranean. The project is coordinated by the Cyprus Institute.

SAROCY: DELINEATING PROBABLE SEA ROUTES BETWEEN CYPRUS AND ITS SURROUNDING COASTAL AREAS AT THE START OF THE HOLOCENE: A SIMULATION APPROACH. Call: RESTART 2016–2020- EXCELLENCE HUBS. Project Number: EXCELLENCE/0918/0143 (2019-2021) UCY Scientist in charge in this project which seeks to offer novel insights based on physical/environmental modelling and computer simulation into the possible prehistoric maritime pathways between Cyprus and other Eastern Mediterranean coastal regions at the boundary between Terminal Pleistocene – early Holocene (Epipaleolithic / early Neolithic). This is a critical period for understanding the origins of the early visitors in Cyprus in connection with the Neolithic transition. The project is coordinated by the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics of the Cyprus University of Technology.

PLEICY: WATER ROUTES IN HUMAN ISLAND DISPERSALS: MODELING THE PLEISTOCENE EXPLOITATION OF CYPRUS Call: RESTART 2016–2020 – DIDAKTOR. Project Number: POST–DOC/0916/0185 (2018-2020) Project Coordinator of this DIDAKTOR program undertaken by Dr Theodora Moutsiou with funding from the Research Promotion Foundation. This project aimed at addressing the lack of evidence for human habitation on the island during the Pleistocene period by using predictive modelling to establish the potential early routes and prime exploitation locales during the earliest human visitations to the island. By doing so the project has significantly enhanced our current knowledge on one of the most exciting new topics in archaeological research worldwide, namely island colonisation, especially in a part of the world where this phenomenon remains largely unexplored.

MedSTACH: EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR ARCHAEOLOGY AND CULTURAL HERITAGE.  Call: H2020–WIDESPREAD–04–2017–TeamingPhase1. Grant Agreement number: 763635. (2017–2018) UCY Scientist in charge in MedSTACH  whose aim was to establish Cyprus as an excellence hub in archaeology and cultural heritage in the Eastern Mediterranean region, capitalising on multidisciplinary research and technological innovation. To this end, key Cypriot public academic institutions and national policy makers and stakeholders teamed up with leading international research and academic institutions to lay the groundwork towards creating the Eastern Mediterranean Science and Technology Centre of Excellence for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage. The project was coordinated by the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics of the Cyprus University of Technology.

GLAZE: THE USE OF GLAZING TRADITIONS TO EXAMINE THE DYNAMICS OF INTERACTION BETWEEN CULTURES IN CONTACT: A CASE STUDY OF CYPRIOT GLAZED WARES FROM THE 11TH TO 17TH CENTURIES AD. A Marie Skłodowska–Curie Actions Individual Fellowship. Call: H2020–MSCA–IF–2016. Grant Agreement Number:  750904. (2017-2019) Project Coordinator of this Marie Skłodowska–Curie Actions Individual Fellowship undertaken by Dr Carmen Ting. The program sought to investigate the suitability of using glazing traditions to reflect the dynamics of interaction between cultures in contact. Cypriot glazed ceramics dating to the 11th and 17th centuries AD, a period when fundamental socio–political changes occurred in the region, will constitute our principal case study. GLAZE had two key research questions: · What are the variations in the glazing traditions that existed in Cyprus during the 11th to 17th centuries AD? · To what extent did the interaction between cultures in contact stimulate the transmission of technological knowledge and practice in glazing traditions? We have devised a cutting–edge cross–disciplinary approach by integrating material science, archaeology, data management and analytics, and anthropological theory.
