Synthesis, characterization and investigation of the properties of:

i) Polynuclear compounds of paramagnetic transition metal ions aiming to complexes with interesting magnetic properties (complexes with single - molecule magnetism behavior, or large spin ground state value),

ii) Functional metal – organic frameworks (MOFs) combining interesting single - crystal to single - crystal (SCSC) transformation with gas sorption/magnetic/optical properties aiming to fine tune these properties through targeted SCSC structural modifications,

iii) Water-stable MOFs for use in wastewater treatment applications and

iv) Photoluminescent MOFs for use in sensing applications.

The intense interest in such metal-organic compounds, stems not only from the fundamental interest in their beautiful crystal structures and physical properties but also from the continuing need for new functional molecule – based materials that could be employed in practical applications.
