Profile

Undergraduate studies at Bryn Mawr College, USA (B.A. in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology and Chemistry, 1989). Graduate studies at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London (Ph.D. in Archaeometallurgy, 1993). She has worked as a research fellow at the Institute of Archaeology, UCL, (1993). She has been teaching Archaeometry and Environmental Archaeology at the University of Cyprus since 1994.


Research Interests

Her research interests include: extractive metallurgy, ancient technology (stone, ceramic, glass, and metals), conservation of metals, production and trade of Cypriot copper in Antiquity, metals trade in the Mediterranean in Antiquity, the production and use of silver.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

NARNIA: NEW ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH NETWORK FOR INTERGRATING APPROACHES TO ANCIENT MATERIAL STUDIES. A Marie Curie Initial Training Network – Proposal Number 265010 Call: FP7-PEOPLE-2010-ITN (2010-2014)
Project coordinator of this Marie Curie Initial Training Network which consists of seven universities and research institutions and two private enterprises, the aim of which is to improve the career prospects of employment for 19 young researchers (16 doctoral and 3 post doctoral fellows), developing their lab-based skills in the study of ancient materials, while contributing to the history and archaeology of the Eastern Mediterranean basin, a region of great historical, cultural and geopolitical significance.

STAR LAB – A MOBILE ARCHAEOLOGICAL LAB. ΝΕΑ ΥΠΟΔΟΜΗ/ΣΤΡΑΤΗΙΙ/0308/30 (2010-2014)
The aim of this project is to create a mobile archaeological laboratory fully equipped with all the necessary equipment for the characterization of ancient materials (portable XRF, optical microscope, etc.), for geophysical survey (proton magnetometer, electrical resistivity metre, differential GPS, etc) and for digital recording of ancient artifacts and monuments (3D Scanner, digital cameras etc). The project is coordinated by the STAR C of the Cyprus Institute.

CAMP: THE CYPRUS ARCHAEOMAGNETIC PROJECT: high resolution dating, magnetic characterization and archaeointensity correlation of major slag deposits in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean NSF grant EAR – Geophysics, 09-539 (2011-2012)
This collaborative project is directed by Prof. Tom Levy, Department of Anthropology and Prof. Lisa Tauxe, Scripps Institution of Oceanography of the University of California San Diego. The aim of the project is the high resolution dating and the magnetic investigation of the ancient slag deposits in Cyprus.

WITNESS THE PAST: Educational Programs for Public and Cultural Heritage Professionals on Illicit Trafficking of Antiquities 160674-CU-1-2009-1-GR-CULTURE-VOL13 (2010-2012).
The objectives of the project are the following: a) to create and implement a didactic children’s program in Egypt, Greece, Cyprus, and Germany on the importance of proper excavation of archaeological sites, b) to have an impact on the prevention of looting of antiquities, and to educate Cultural Heritage (CH) professionals on the scientific tools to help authenticate and fingerprint looted antiquity and c) to produce best practice guidelines or a “Museum theft response plan” aimed at law enforcement and museum professionals for stolen goods. RECONSTRUCTING WOODLAND VEGETATION AND ITS EXPLOITATION BY PAST SOCIETIES, BASED ON ANTHRACOLOGICAL ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION. (2008-2011)
Project coordinator of a research program funded by the Research Promotion Foundation (ΠΕΝΕΚ/ΕΝΙΣΧ/0308/35), which seeks to investigate the economic importance of the forests in ancient Cyprus and to record the negative effects that over-exploitation of this natural resource had on the environment and of course eventually on the economy of the island. ARCANE: ASSOCIATED REGIONAL CHRONOLOGIES FOR THE ANCIENT NEAR EAST. RG 3 CYPRUS. ESF funded project (2006-2011)
The goal of the ARCANE project is to produce a reliable relative and absolute chronology of the entire Near East based on the synchronization of regional chronologies for the third millennium BC. Member of the Regional Group of Cyprus which is led by Prof. Edgar Peltenburg. Responsible for the study and publication of metal artifacts that can be safely dated to the third millennium.
