Smart Rehabilitation 3.0 aims to mitigate and cover the gap between educational offer and the social reality, by defining, a new professional profile of “Rehabilitation Expert” and the creation of homogeneous curricula, validated at European level, for the training of these experts, within the framework of higher education. The Project focuses on the incorporation of new technologies, both, in terms of techniques and training tools, as well as on the knowledge of materials and innovative construction systems. Specific training programs, MOOC training material as well as a specialized online library for accessing technological innovation and innovative interventions will be developed. The Project has specialized partners, both Universities and entities from the construction sector of Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Lithuania and Ireland (Polytechnic of Catalonia, Palermo, Cyprus and Kaunas). It has started in November 2019 and ends in April 2022.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On October 1st, the project\u00a0\u201cRE-DWELL: Delivering affordable and sustainable housing in Europe\u201d<\/strong>, a Marie Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) co-financed by the H2020 programme, has started its activities. Housing in many European countries has become unaffordable for many. In fact, it is now considered to be one of the most important national issues in Europe and its solution is proving very challenging. RE-DWELL will train a new generation of professionals with the transdisciplinary skills which are needed to address the urgent need of affordable and sustainable housing, a major challenge for European societies.<\/p>\n

15 early-stage researchers, to be contracted for this project, will carry out a transdisciplinary research encompassing design planning and building, community participation, and policy and financing. Their work will be supervised by a qualified international board of experts from a variety of academic and professional fields. Researchers will carry out their work as PhD students in the host academic institution, with stages in the professional organizations participating in the network.<\/p>\n

The RE-DWELL consortium consists of 10 universities and 12 non-academic partner organisations representing 9 European countries (Spain, France, UK, Croatia, Hungary, Cyprus, Netherlands, Portugal and Belgium). ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION FOR CONFLICT TRANSFORMATION_ACT<\/h4>\n

ACT combines architectural education, urban conflict theory, peace education principles and social psychology’s contact hypothesis to examine whether thinking about space and the city can mitigate conflict-induced biases between adversarial groups and create the basis for policies involving shared spaces, infrastructures and the public realm within a divided city. Consequently, ACT explores the act of design and urban planning as a conflict transformational process; it is a pedagogic research project which aims at the integration of different approaches to urban conflict issues, from both the social and the spatial sciences, through pedagogic innovation and Information and Communication Technology (ICT). It aims at establishing a platform of collaboration to address conflict challenges faced by contemporary cities from a multidisciplinary perspective.
\nThe key objective of the project is to develop an innovative system of teaching urban conflict transformation, bridging across research and institutional boundaries in educational cultures, through the act of design and the development and use of digital resources. ACT thus aims to develop a model of education based on architectural design that works in two ways: as a method of developing a \u2018shared urban framework\u2019 for divided cities and as a tool for conflict transformation. To this end, the project entails the formation of a research network consisting of local and international institutions bringing together experts from architecture, social sciences, education and social psychology of intergroup conflict. In doing this, the project will make education in urban conflict issues more open and inclusive by providing resources which are accessible not only to those enrolled in higher education programs, but to anyone wanting to access training regardless of their geographical location, educational culture or ability to travel, through two intensive summer programs supported by a blended learning approach.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The international Erasmus+ project\u00a0\u201cEmerging Perspectives on Urban Morphology: Researching and Learning through multiple practices\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>aims at the integration of different, often isolated urban form research and teaching approaches through pedagogic innovation and Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The Sustainable Urban Governance through Augmented Reality (SUGAR) project aims to develop innovative best-practice protocols and guidelines on Sustainable Urban Governance and specifically Public Participation through Augmented Reality. Urban Design and Planning worldwide have long been criticised for their lack of meaningful public consultation and participation in the process of the making of our cities. Currently, the existing practices of consultation and participation are within the confines or council meetings, complex form filling and survey reports that most often than not carry little weight towards the decisions made by the planning authorities. For the last decades, the concept of Participatory Planning as an approach of designing has been heavily incorporated in many disciplinary fields. This project investigates the role of participation as the process that users, and other stakeholders, are actively involved in the decision-making process through the approach of achieving Sustainable Urban Governance and utilising innovative immersive technologies (specifically AR). We argue that the application of participatory design in the design process is essential to provide economically and socially sustainable outcomes.<\/p>\n

SUGAR aims to empower both citizens that seek ways to participate in the decision-making process for the design of their cities and neighbourhoods and stakeholders that would like to involve the public actively in the process of shaping their environment creating a lasting and meaningful impact.<\/p>\n

SUGAR builds a partnership between the Cyprus University of Technology (Social Computing Research Centre), University of Cyprus (Department of Architecture) and Harvard University (Graduate School of Design and School of Engineering and Applied Sciences).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

According to UNEP, the building sector is estimated to be worth 10% of the global GDP and employs 111 million people. In addition, buildings use about 40% of global energy, 40% of global resources and emit approximately 33% of global GHG emissions. Finally, the fact that people today spend, on average, more than 80% of their time indoors, enhances its social importance. All above indicate the necessity to optimize building design.<\/p>\n

Architects usually name “optimal design” the choice among a very limited set of design alternatives, dictated by their experience and intuition. However, modern design of structures requires one to account for a great number of criteria deriving from multiple disciplines, often of conflicting nature. The vast number of alternative choices enhances the possibility of arriving at an optimum with the incorporation of smart, automatic tools in the design process, further guiding designer’s intuition.<\/div>\n
The principal aim of the proposed Network is to create and test methodologies for the application of optimization techniques in different design phases of civil structures by developing strong synergies among a multi-disciplinary team of academic experts from Greece, France, Cyprus, Canada, Turkey, Egypt and Jordan and SMEs from France and Greece.<\/div>\n
A first goal of the project is to exploit the use of shape and topology optimization techniques in computer aided architectural design. Moreover, the Network wants to exchange ideas, propose formulations that correspond to real-life applications and develop solutions for optimal multi-disciplinary architectural design. Of particular interest is the combination of criteria deriving from structural mechanics, eco-design, bioclimatic design and acoustic performance.<\/div>\n
For each topic, joint workshops, seminars and long-term visits will be organized at the coordinating and partner institutions. The results will be published in scientific journals, professional magazines and presented in international conferences.<\/div>\n

Schools in the European South are seriously damaged by the financial crisis and the profession of architect has irreparable scars because of unemployment. The European policies for higher education found education institutions more vulnerable to become good students providers for the master studies in central and northern Europe. By remaining passive, the institutions in MEDES Countries run the risk to be violently absorbed and marginalized by the financial, political and social dynamics. ARCHI.MEDES project wishes to make a broader alliance with the strategic objective to facilitate the schools of the south to redefine their identities and strengths. With the intellectual outcomes it will produce the debates and the experiences exchange it will assure, will raise to participating institutions awareness of the need of using local potential for strategic development of the institutions. It will also offer the necessary tools to implement reforms and strategic amendments, reforms and adjustments to their structures in order to cope with the situation. After that, the short term impact of the project on the participating institutions will be the rise of awareness regarding the necessity for the establishment of broader sets of collaborations, of implementing future strategic plans, of focusing on creativity and innovation, of promoting a quality culture in the offered educational services. The long term impact is the development of the quality of teaching, the quality of educational structures and the quality of the graduating architects, more responsive to social needs and local particularities and finally the generation of more competent architects and architectural services in the MEDES Countries.<\/div>\n

Summary:<\/p>\n

The project aims at the modernisation of higher education in South Neighbouring Area with regard to curricula design and delivery, employability of graduates, recognition of the degree programs, quality of higher education and staff training. These components are part of the development strategies and higher education reforms in countries of the Middle East and North Africa, which have been chosen to meet the requirements of the Bologna Process and address the EU Higher Education Modernisation Agenda. The Tuning approach consists of a methodology to (re-) design, develop, implement and evaluate study programmes for each of the Bologna cycles. Furthermore, Tuning serves as a platform for developing reference points at subject area level. The main aim and objective of Tuning is to contribute significantly to the elaboration of a framework of comparable and compatible qualifications in each of the (potential) signatory countries of the Bologna process, which should be described in terms of workload, level, learning outcomes, competences and profile.<\/div>\n
The project will focus on the curricular reform in four subject areas (Law and Good Governance including Human Rights; Health Care and Nursing; Construction Trades, Engineering and Architecture; Tourism), which have been identified as regional priorities for the countries of Southern Neighbouring Area. The project is designed to adapt, restructure and test curricula in 4 subject areas using the European Credit Transfer System and recognition of degrees, in accordance to the Tuning methodology and approaches, with the aim of developing and establishing study programmes for the first cycle. In particular, the project will focus on generic and specific competences, structure of content, ECTS and students\u00b4 workload; teaching, learning and assessment methods, and enhancement of the quality of the teaching materials and educational process. Updated curricula will be developed with the aim of mutual recognition and arrangements between higher education institutions in the EU and in the Southern Neighbouring Area. In this regard, the country-wide consultation process with employers, students, graduates and academic staff will be organised in every participating Partner Country, in order to identify the most important competences in 4 subject areas. The main results of the project consist of establishment of subject area groups at national and regional levels, Reference Points for the design and delivery of degree programmes (including cycle level descriptors), Degree Programme Profiles (including programme competences and programme learning outcomes) and Curricula of Degree Programmes (first cycle) in 4 subject area.<\/div>\n
