DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES 4th RETREAT.
The retreat entitled, "Research Activities of the Department of Biological Sciences of the University of Cyprus", was organized for the 3rd consecutive year by the Department of Biological Sciences, on Thursday 2 and Friday, June 3, 2016. The two-day retreat took place at the Polis Chrysochous Cultural Center . The event was open to the public and was sponsored by Energon and Galanis Lab Supplies.
The field of Biological Sciences can be described as pioneering, as in the last decade has seen unprecedented rapid progress in understanding living systems at the cellular and molecular level as well as the interactions of organisms with their environment and the importance of biodiversity for humanity.
The retreat had an informational character both to the scientific community as well as the general public about the latest research activities of the Department of Biological Sciences of the University of Cyprus. In the two-day retreat, presentations were made by the heads of the research laboratories of the Department as well as postdoctoral researchers and students. As part of the event, an exhibition and presentation of relevant scientific posters (poster) took place. Guided by academic excellence, 6 awards were given for the best student presentations - 3 awards for the best speakers and 3 awards for the best posters.
The event was also attended by the academician of the Diaspora, George Tegos, who developed his proposal for the development of a biomedical innovation center at the University of Cyprus.
6 MILLION EUROS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CYPRUS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE BUILDING OF THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES (19 February 2016)
A new large donation, crucial for the development of the University of Cyprus, amounting to 6 million euros, was made by the AG Leventis Foundation with the aim of erecting the building of the Department of Biological Sciences on campus. The signing ceremony of the Donation Agreement took place on Thursday, February 18, 2016 and the agreement was signed by the Rector of the University of Cyprus, Professor Konstantinos Christofidis, the President of the Foundation "A. G. Leventis ”Mr. Anastasios P. Leventis, with witnesses, the Minister of Finance Mr. Harry Georgiadis and the President of the University Council, Mr. Manthos Mavrommatis.
The building will be named "Building of the Department of Biological Sciences" AG Leventis Foundation "". The Square between the Building and the Teaching Spaces CHOD 03 will be named "Petra", referring to the place of origin of the donor, thus expressing the gratitude of the members of the university community to the Leventis family. In addition, the Hall of the Building will be named "Constantinos Leventis", in memory of the person who has been next to the University of Cyprus from the very first moment.
"With the generous donation of the Foundation, for the construction of the building of the Department of Biological Sciences, it becomes possible to more effectively fulfill the goals of the Department, including the education of our students and the development of research in its areas of focus, in order to understand the protection of human beings and the environment and the strengthening of global efforts for sustainable management of natural wealth ", noted, among others, the Rector of the University of Cyprus, Professor Constantinos Christofidis, thanking the Foundation that supports the University of Cyprus from The Rector said characteristically: "We are really grateful that we have the Foundation and the Leventis family by our side. The name Leventis has been identified with creation, love of culture, environment and man. It has been identified with the beautiful face of the world of Cyprus today, that of investing in young people, human capital and research, that of protecting historical memory and biodiversity ".
During his speach, Mr. Anastasios P. Leventis, President of the Foundation "A. G. Leventi "stressed that the close cooperation and support of the Foundation to the University of Cyprus begins with the establishment in 1989. In the short period of its existence, as he said, the University has gained the respect of the international academic community and is now highly valued internationally, thanks to the quality of its staff and students, as well as due to the expansion of the Campus itself. The donation of the Foundation for the construction of the building of the Department of Biological Sciences is in line, stressed Mr. Leventis, with the desire of the AG Leventis Foundation to encourage education, environmental sustainability and research in life sciences.
