It will investigate several practices, including engagement with questions, such as the following: What form did war performances take, how did they change throughout time, and how were they constructed through narrative? How did soldiers behave in the context of battle? Who decided which forms of ritual practices were performed, and how could victory but also defeat be ritually shaped, reshaped and interpreted? How did actors use ritual performances for self-representation?<\/p>\n<p>The conference\u2019s focus on both the medieval East and West offers the opportunity for comparative work on specific features of different medieval war cultures: Byzantine, Islamic, and Latin.
