The three-days Workshop on "Environmental Radioactivity: Theory and Practice", which was successfully organized within the framework of the European Project A-CINCH, was attended by undergraduate (3) and postgraduate (5) students of the Department of Chemistry, as well as final year high school students (6). The participants were informed on basic concepts of Nuclear Chemistry and Radiochemistry, industrial and medical applications of radionuclides and were able to observe alpha- and gamma-radioactivity measurements using various radiometric techniques. Moreover, the students participated and solved exercises/problems related to specific radioactivity and radioactivity/quantity conversions for radionuclides found in environmental systems (e.g. uranium isotopes in seawater) and food (e.g. radioactive K-40 in banana chips).
The workshop, which took place with physical presence and taking all the necessary protection measures against coronavirus, was organized by the Laboratory of Radioanalytical and Environmental Chemistry of the Department of Chemistry of the University of Cyprus.
