Ph.D. Fellowship opportunities offered by the China Studies Program (CPS)

 The program is sponsored by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation and offers generous fellowships to cover the cost of tuition, living expenses, international travel expenses, and prior access to research subsidies, by offering opportunities for collaboration with esteemed professors across 18 universities in China.

Since 2013, the program has supported more than 1000 international students in areas of humanities and social sciences to pursue their doctoral degrees in Chinese universities or conduct fieldwork in China. The program includes two categories; the Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship and the Ph.D. Fellowship in China:

  • Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship: This program funds overseas outstanding doctoral students registered in foreign universities coming to China for study, research and writing of their doctoral dissertations, for six months or no more than two academic years. A language proficiency of HSK Level 3 or above is required.
  • Ph. D. Fellowship in China:  This program funds overseas outstanding master's degree holders to spend three or four years in pursuing doctoral degrees at Chinese universities. A language proficiency of HSK Level 5 or above is required.

Chinese Government Scholarship

This scholarship provides an opportunity for academic studies in China.

In order to promote the sustainable development of Confucius Institute (CI) and international Chinese education, Confucius Institute Headquarters (known as Hanban) has established the “Confucius Institute Scholarship” programme to encourage students, scholars and Chinese language teachers worldwide to study Chinese language and culture in China, or proceed to a Master´s degree in “Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)”.

 There are the following categories for the scholarships (2020):
  • For Students of Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages(MTCSOL)
  • For Students of One-Academic-Year + MTCSOL
  • For Students of Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages(BTCSOL)
  • For One-Academic-Year Students
  • For One-Semester Students
  • For Four-Weeks Students
Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens and must be between 16 and 35 years old (Chinese language teachers in post shall be aged below
45, and applicants for BTCSOL scholarship should be aged below 20).
