Recent research

My research project is focused on the excavations of ancient Tamassos, one of the city kingdoms of Iron Age Cyprus which is located at the modern village of Politiko and became an excavation site in 1885, when Max Ohnefalsch-Richter concentrated his search for antiquities on central Cyprus. In order to publish Ohnefalsch-Richter’s manuscript, Hans-Günter Buchholz conducted supplementary excavations at Tamassos on behalf of the German Archaeological Institute that turned into several seasons of fieldwork between 1970 and 1981, followed by many more workup-campaigns. As a result, the foundations of several architectural units were unearthed, among them buildings of various eras, sections of the huge fortification walls and two places of cult.

 

In 2010, the first volume of the final publication on the city’s necropoleis was eventually published; unfortunately Buchholz passed in the following year and could not resume his work. However, shortly before his death, Buchholz entrusted the entire documentation to Hartmut Matthäus and Matthias Recke. In 2019, they offered me the opportunity to study Buchholz’s records on the city excavation, with the goal to present the development of the site, the function of its various buildings and the publication of the hitherto unknown material, the results of which will contribute to our all too scarce knowledge of Cypro-Archaic and Cypro-Classical urban environments.
