Η Άννα Δημητρίου είναι μεταδιδακτορική ερευνήτρια στο Τμήμα Ιστορίας και Αρχαιολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου, στο πλαίσιο του ερευνητικού προγράμματος SHARE: “Mapping SHipwreck ARchaeologies in the Eastern Mediterranean: the sites, the people, and the environment”. Το πρόγραμμα, το οποίο συντονίζει η Αναπληρώτρια Καθηγήτρια Στέλλα Δεμέστιχα, και χρηματοδοτείται από το Ίδρυμα Honor Frost, εστιάζεται στη μελέτη της ιστορίας της ανάπτυξης της αρχαιολογίας των ναυαγίων στην ευρύτερη ανατολική Μεσόγειο.

Αποφοίτησε από το Τμήμα Ιστορίας και Αρχαιολογίας του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης το 2006. Συνέχισε τις σπουδές της στο University College of London του Ηνωμένου Βασίλειου όπου το 2007 έλαβε μεταπτυχιακό με τίτλο MA in Managing archaeological sites. To 2019 έλαβε το διδακτορικό της από το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου υπό την εποπτεία της Αναπληρώτριας Καθηγήτριας Στέλλας Δεμέστιχα. Η έρευνά της, με τίτλο «Ancient shipwreck sites in Cyprus: itineraries in the contemporary world» επικεντρώθηκε στη μελέτη των αρχαίων ναυαγίων ως τόπους αλληλεπίδρασης  και ενασχόλησης στη σύγχρονη κοινωνία.

Από το 2008 η Άννα συμμετέχει ενεργά στο πεδίο της ενάλιας αρχαιολογίας στην Κύπρο: ως Διευθύνων Σύμβουλος του Ιδρύματος ΘΕΤΙΣ (2008-2012), ως βοηθός ερευνητής στο Εργαστήριο Εναλίων Αρχαιολογικών Ερευνών (ΕΡΕΝΑΕ) του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου (2013-2014), και μέσα από την συμμετοχή της στα διάφορα ερευνητικά προγράμματα του ΕΡΕΝΑΕ από το 2015 μέχρι και σήμερα.  

Τα κύρια ερευνητικά ενδιαφέροντα της Άννας επικεντρώνονται στην ενάλια αρχαιολογία, την αρχαιολογία των ναυαγίων, την αρχαιολογική εθνογραφία, την αρχαιολογία του κοινού και στις προσλήψεις και χρήσεις της αρχαιότητας στη σύγχρονη κοινωνία.

Από το 2008 συμμετέχει σε ερευνητικά προγράμματα που αντικατοπτρίζουν τα ερευνητικά της ενδιαφέροντα.

Συμμετείχε σε υποβρύχιες αρχαιολογικές έρευνες:

• Ανασκαφή του Ναυαγίου του Μαζωτού, Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. Διευθύντρια: Αν. Καθηγήτρια Στέλλα Δεμέστιχα (2009-2013, 2019).
• Επιφανειακή έρευνα του αγκυροβολίου της Ξυλοφάγου, Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. Διευθύντρια: Αν. Καθηγήτρια Στέλλα Δεμέστιχα (2012).
• Ανασκαφή του Ναυαγίου των Νησιών, Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. Διευθύντρια: Αν. Καθηγήτρια Στέλλα Δεμέστιχα (2014, 2017).
• Επιφανειακή έρευνα του Ναυαγίου του Πρωταρά Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. Διευθύντρια: Αν. Καθηγήτρια Στέλλα Δεμέστιχα (2019).
• Επιφανειακή έρευνα του αγκυροβολίου της Πετούντας, Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. Διευθύντρια: Αν. Καθηγήτρια Στέλλα Δεμέστιχα (2021).

Παράλληλα, η Άννα συμμετείχε σε διάφορα προγράμματα αρχαιολογίας του κοινού και αρχαιολογικής εθνογραφίας:

• Δημιουργία υποβρύχιου αρχαιολογικού πάρκου στο λιμάνι της Αμαθούντας: Υλοποίηση και οργάνωση των δράσεων για τη δημιουργία του υποβρύχιου αρχαιολογικού πάρκου, στο πλαίσιο του προγράμματος “ΑΝΔΙΚΑΤ: Καταδυτικές Διαδρομές σε Θαλάσσιες Προστατευόμενες Περιοχές της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου- Ανάπτυξη Δικτύου Καταδυτικού Τουρισμού”, Επιχειρησιακό πρόγραμμα Interreg V-A Ελλάδα-Κύπρος 2014-2020 (Τμήμα Ιστορίας-Αρχαιολογίας, Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου).
• Εικονική έκθεση iMARE CULTURE: Επιμέλεια της έκθεσης: “iMARE CULTURE: a virtual journey around underwater archaeological sites of the Mediterranean” (Δημοτικό Μουσείο Θάλασσα, Αγία Νάπα, 2019). Anna Demetriou is a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of History and Archaeology at the University of Cyprus, in the framework of the research project SHARE: “Mapping SHipwreck ARchaeologies in the Eastern Mediterranean: the sites, the people, and the environment”. The project, coordinated by Associate Professor Stella Demesticha, and funded by the Honor Frost Foundation, seeks to investigate the history of the development of shipwreck archaeological practice in the wider eastern Mediterranean.

Anna received her BA degree in History and Archaeology from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 2006. During 2006-2007 she continued her postgraduate studies in Management of Archaeological Sites, at the University College of London, United Kingdom. In 2019 she was awarded her doctoral title by the University of Cyprus. Her research, entitled “Ancient shipwreck sites in Cyprus: itineraries in the contemporary world” focused on the examination of ancient shipwrecks as places of interaction and engagements in contemporary society.

Since 2008 Anna has been actively involved in the maritime archaeological field in Cyprus: as the Executive Director of Thetis Foundation (2008-2012), as Research Assistant at the Maritime Archaeological Research Laboratory (MARELab) of the University of Cyprus (2013-2014), and since 2015  through her participation in research projects of the MARELab.

Anna’s main research interests focus on maritime archaeology, shipwreck archaeology, archaeological ethnography, public archaeology and the perception and use of antiquity in contemporary society.

Since 2008 she has been engaged in the different aspects of maritime archaeological research.

Particularly, Anna has participated in underwater archaeological field projects:

• Mazotos shipwreck project, University of Cyprus. Director: Associate Prof. Stella Demesticha (2009-2013, 2019).
• Xylophagou anchorage project, University of Cyprus. Director: Associate Prof. Stella Demesticha (2012).
• Nissia shipwreck project, University of Cyprus. Director: Associate Prof. Stella Demesticha (2014, 2017).
• Protaras shipwreck project, University of Cyprus. Director: Associate Prof. Stella Demesticha (2019).
• Petounda anchorage project, University of Cyprus. Director: Associate Prof. Stella Demesticha (2021).

Furthermore, Anna has been involved in several public archaeology and archaeological ethnographic projects:

• Amathus harbor underwater archaeological park :Implementation and coordination of research activities to transform the harbour of Amathus into an underwater archaeological park. The initiative has been undertaken  in the framework of the project “Diving itineraries in Maritime Protected Areas of the Eastern Mediterranean – Development of a Diving Tourism Network (ANDIKAT)” of the programme  INTERREG V -A Greece- Cyprus 2014-2020 (Department of History and Archaeology, University of Cyprus).
• iMARE CULTURE virtual exhibition: Curator of the exhibition “iMARE CULTURE: a virtual journey around underwater archaeological sites of the Mediterranean” (Thalassa Municipal Museum, Agia Napa, 2019), European project iMARE CULTURE, coordinated by the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), (Department of History and Archaeology, University of Cyprus).
• Maritime Outreach Bus, Cyprus: Curator and educator of the mobile exhibition Maritime Outreach Bus, Cyprus, which toured Cyprus in 2017. Department of History and Archaeology, UCy and Maritime Archaeology Trust (United Kingdom).
