Προπτυχιακές σπουδές στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου, Τμήμα Ιστορίας και Αρχαιολογίας (2008-2012). Μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Sheffield, Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο (MSc in Archaeological Materials, 2013). Ολοκλήρωσε τις διδακτορικές του σπουδές στο ίδιο Ινστιτούτο (PhD, 2018). O Σέργιος Μενελάου είναι βασικός συνεργάτης του ερευνητικού προγράμματος «Ο Προϊστορικός Οικισμός στο Ηραίον της Σάμου» (https://www.dainst.org/en/projekt/-/project-display/247819, https://www.dainst.org/en/projekt/-/project-display/247951), που διευθύνεται από το 2009 από την Δρα Ουρανία Κουκά (Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου), σε συνεργασία με το Γερμανικό Αρχαιολογικό Ινστιτούτο Αθηνών. Το 2018-2019 εργάστηκε ως μεταδιδακτορικός ερευνητής στο Πανεπιστήμιο Koç, ANAMED (Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations) στην Κωνσταντινούπολη (Τουρκία) (https://anamed.ku.edu.tr/menelaou-sergios/) και το 2019-2020 εργάστηκε με τρίμηνη υποτροφία στο Εργαστήριο Fitch (Βρετανική Σχολή Αθηνών) μέσω ενός Fitch Bursary Award. Από τον Σεπτέμβριο 2020 είναι ο βασικός ερευνητής και συντονιστής του ερευνητικού μεταδιδακτορικού προγράμματος BORDER, «Borderlands as areas of mobility and connectivity during the third millennium BC: Examining regional ceramic technologies between the east Aegean islands, western Anatolia and Cyprus», υπό την εποπτεία της Δρος. Ουρανίας Κουκά και χρηματοδοτείται από το Ίδρυμα Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας Κύπρου (Horizon 2020-2nd Opportunity, RESTART 2016-2020). (https://www.ucy.ac.cy/border/).
Ο Σ. Μενελάου έχει συμμετάσχει σε διάφορα ανασκαφικά προγράμματα στην Κύπρο (Παλαίπαφος-Κούκλια, Νέα Πάφος) και την Ελλάδα (Ηραίον-Σάμος, Καλαπόδι-Αταλάντη, Δασκαλειό-Κέρος) και έχει παρουσιάσει τα ερευνητικά του αποτελέσματα σε συνέδρια και ημερίδες στην Κύπρο, Ελλάδα, Τουρκία, Γερμανία, Αυστρία, Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, Ολλανδία, Ελβετία, Κροατία, Ισπανία, Μεξικό και ΗΠΑ.
Έχει λάβει υποτροφίες και χρηματοδοτήσεις για έρευνα από το Greek Archaeological Committe UK, το Ίδρυμα Κρατικών Υποτροφιών στην Ελλάδα, το Ινστιτούτο Αιγαιακής Προϊστορίας, το Πανεπιστήμιο του Sheffield, το Ίδρυμα Α.Γ. Λεβέντης, το Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών-Ίδρυμα Α.Σ. Ωνάση και το Mediterranean Archaeological Trust.
