Stavros Demetriou was appointed at the University of Cyprus as a Lecturer in Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure in January 2026. He holds an LLB in Law (2012) and an LLM in Criminal Justice (2013) from the University of Kent. He also holds a PhD in Law (2018) from the University of Sussex. Between 2017 and 2021, Stavros worked as a Lecturer in Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at the University of Sussex teaching a range of crime-related modules to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Between 2021 and 2025 he worked at Elias A. Stephanou LLC as a criminal defence barrister. During that period, he was also a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Cyprus. Stavros published a number of articles in international peer-reviewed journals, such as the Criminal Law Review and the Legal Studies. Moreover, he published a monograph (‘Indirect Criminalisation: The True Limits of Criminal Punishment’) with Hart Publishing.
Stavros’s research interests lie in the areas of criminal law, criminal procedure, criminal evidence, human rights and the rights of victims of crime.
