Ο Μάριος Πιττάλης εκλέχθηκε λέκτορας στη μαθηματική παιδεία στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου το 2021 (Undergraduate studies at the University of Cyprus: B.A. in Educational Sciences, 2000, Graduate Studies at the University of Cyprus, Department of Education: M.A. in Mathematics Education, 2004, PhD in Mathematics Education, University of Cyprus, 2008). Από το 2003 μέχρι το 2021 εργάστηκε στο Τμήμα Επιστημών της Αγωγής του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου ως ειδικό εκπαιδευτικό προσωπικό. Από το 2015 διδάσκει στο Διαπανεπιστημιακό Πρόγραμμα Μεθοδολογίας της Διδασκαλίας των Μαθηματικών του Τμήματος Μαθηματικών του Εθνικού και Καποδιστριακού Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών. Συμμετείχε στη διεξαγωγή διεθνών ερευνών καθώς και σε σημαντικό αριθμό ερευνητικών προγραμμάτων που χρηματοδοτήθηκαν  από το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου, το Ίδρυμα Προώθησης Έρευνας και την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή.  Διαθέτει πλούσιο συγγραφικό έργο με περισσότερες από 80 δημοσιεύσεις σε διεθνή επιστημονικά περιοδικά, πρακτικά διεθνών συνεδρίων και κεφάλαια σε βιβλία που εκδίδονται από διεθνείς οίκους. Είναι μέλος εκδοτικών επιτροπών σε διεθνή περιοδικά. Είναι διορισμένος από το Υπουργείο Παιδείας της Κύπρου ως επιστημονικός συνεργάτης στην ομάδα ανάπτυξης του Αναλυτικού Προγράμματος των Μαθηματικών στην Κύπρο. Επιπρόσθετα, συμμετέχει ενεργά τα τελευταία 6 χρόνια στην ανάπτυξη του νέου διδακτικού υλικού των μαθηματικών για το δημοτικό σχολείο.

Τα ερευνητικά του ενδιαφέροντα εστιάζονται στη μελέτη της δομής της αλγεβρικής σκέψης των μαθητών από τις πρώτες τάξεις του δημοτικού σχολείου μέχρι το γυμνάσιο με έμφαση στην περιγραφή και στους τρόπους ανάπτυξης της συναρτησιακής σκέψης. Επιπρόσθετα, η έρευνα του διερευνά τους τρόπους ενσωμάτωσης σύγχρονων ψηφιακών εργαλείων στη διδασκαλία των μαθηματικών και την επίδραση ψηφιακών περιβαλλόντων μάθησης στην κατανόηση των μαθηματικών εννοιών. Η έρευνα για το σχεδιασμό διαδραστικών περιβαλλόντων μάθησης συνδέεται με την εργασία του στην ανάπτυξη του αναλυτικού προγράμματος των μαθηματικών στην Κύπρο και των διδακτικών εγχειριδίων των μαθηματικών του δημοτικού σχολείου και την ανάπτυξη ψηφιακών βιβλίων. Οι πιο πάνω πυλώνες των ερευνητικών του δραστηριοτήτων συνδέονται άμεσα με τα μαθήματα που διδάσκει στο προπτυχιακό πρόγραμμα του τμήματος τα οποία αξιοποιούν αποτελέσματα της έρευνας, εμπλουτίζοντας το περιεχόμενο των μαθημάτων με παραδείγματα εφαρμογών στην τάξη και τρόπους εργασίας των μαθητών.
