Dr. Antonios Charokopos is a Lecturer in Pulmonology at the Medical School of the University of Cyprus. He was fully trained in the United States (USA), where he remained for 18 years before returning to his homeland. He holds three American Board certifications: Internal Medicine (2017), Pulmonary Disease (2019), and Critical Care Medicine (2020). He has served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Mayo Clinic, USA.
He graduated from Yale University with a scholarship (Bachelor’s & Master’s degrees in Molecular Biology, Honors, Magna Cum Laude, Honorary Scholarship, 2005–2009). He continued his studies with a scholarship at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine (Doctor of Medicine (MD), Alfred Schmakle Award for Excellence in the Art and Practice of Medicine, Full Tuition Scholarship, Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) research grant 2009–2014). He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Yale School of Medicine – Yale New Haven Hospital (2014–2017). He then pursued fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, New York (2017–2020). He trained in flexible bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS TBNA) for mediastinal evaluation. He served in the Intensive Care Unit during the dramatic surge of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City from March to June 2020. He completed a 12-month sub-fellowship in interstitial lung diseases (ILD) at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota (2020–2021). Subsequently, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and worked at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, WI for 2.5 years. In that role, in addition to teaching duties, he founded the Interstitial Lung Disease Clinic, performed EBUS and diagnostic bronchoscopy procedures, and also worked in the Intensive Care Unit.
During the process of returning to Cyprus/Greece in 2024, he also worked part-time as a clinical intensivist at North Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis. In December 2024, he was appointed as a Pulmonology Medical Officer at Nicosia General Hospital within the State Health Services Organization (OKYPY). In August 2025, he began his role as a faculty member (Lecturer) in Pulmonology at the University of Cyprus Medical School, while continuing his clinical work at Nicosia General Hospital.
