I graduated in Archaeology at the University of Florence, Italy (2007). In 2009 I have completed the Master in Maritime Archaeology at Flinders University, Australia, while between 2010 and 2016 have worked at the University of Sassari (Italy), where I was awarded a scholarship by the Regional Government of the island to develop a strategic plan for the public interpretation of the Sardinian maritime cultural heritage. In 2013 I was awarded with a second Regional Scholarship for the implementation of underwater remote sensing technologies for the location of underwater archaeological sites along the Western Coast of Sardinia. In 2016 I defended my PhD dissertation which focused on a theoretical and methodological discussion of photogrammetric techniques employed in underwater archaeology.

In 2016-2017, I was a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Iuav University of Venice (Italy), where I was part of a team developing a virtual reality (VR) application (within a boader museum exhibition) on the Italo-French brigantine Mercure, excavated nearby Venice by the Univeristà Ca’ Foscari of Venice. The VR application is now accessible in the dedicated section of the Museum of the Sea in Caorle (Venice). In 2017 and 2018, I have been an iMARECULTURE Fellow at the M.A.RE.Lab, Department of History and Archaeology (University of Cyprus), focusing on the development of an underwater excavation serious game (SG) including the creation of varied digital assets for the game environment, within the European funded project iMARECULTURE. In May 2018, I have also been an iMARECULTURE Fellow at the Department of Informatics at Mazaryk University in Brno (Czech Republic). Between 2018 and 2020 Secci held a Post-Doctoral Research position at the Department of History and Archaeology (University of Cyprus). The project focused on the study of wreck site formation processes at the Mazotos shipwreck site. In 2021 I have hold a position as a Special Scientist at MARELab within the frame of the ANDIKAT Project. As part of a team, I have collaborated to the acquisiton of 3D photogrammetric data functional to the design and development of physical and digital interpretive tools for the creation of a land/underwater cultural trail at the site of the Amathus Hellenistic Harbour (Cyprus).

I have (and still am) collaborated with several Italian and International Institutions. Among the others the Italian Superior Institute for Conservation and Restoration (Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il Restauro – ISCR), the Greek Ephorate for Underwater Archaeology (Greece), the East Carolina University (ECU, USA), the Soprintendenza del Mare della Regione Siciliana (Italy), the SouthamptonUniversity (UK), and the US Department of Defense “Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency” (DPAA, USA). I have published close to twenty between Journal articles and book chapters on my main research interests.

I am a specialist in underwater photogrammetry and have participaed in various projects around the Mediterranean, such as: shipwreck excavations in Italy (Pantelleria, Sicily) and Cyprus (Mazotos, Protaras and Fig Tree Bay), as well as excavations and surveys on numerous submerged sites (Archipelago of La Maddalena, Sardinia-Italy; Submerged Roman Harbour in Lipari, Sicily-Italy; Submerged Baiae, Campania-Italy; Sunken City of Epidavros, Greece; harbour structures in Dreamer’s Bay-Akrotiri, Cyprus). In collaboration with ECU and DPAA, I have also investigated two WWII aircraft crash sites in Italy.

Currently, I am a Special Scientist at MARELab, and Principal Investigator of the MARE CYPRIUM Project, which is a public outreach exercise that aims at raising awareness of maritime cultural heritage (MCH) value, on the island of Cyprus. By articulating digital data acquired [by MARELab] over the last decade into an integrated set of digital multimedia applications (DMAs), the Project will bring MCH closer to the general public and will thus contribute to the protection and preservation of monuments and sites.

My main research interest focus on the possibilities provided by information and communication technologies (ICTs) both as regards the analysis of the archaeological evidence and as regards the communication and promotion of cultural heritage (underwater and otherwise). My interest in digital archeology is not limited solely to technical and technological aspects, but also tries to analyze what are the immediate or potential effects of these tools in the development of archaeology fieldwork activity, in the interpretative process and in archaeological philosophy more generally. My interest in digital archeology is actually framed in a wider interest in the public aspect of the discipline, within which digital tools play a fundamental role (in both the 'positive' and the 'negative') as a communication medium. In relation to this interest in the theoretical / philosophical aspects on the effects of ICTs, I have developed an acute interest in archaeological philosophy (theory) and the development of the archeological discipline in the Modern World. Finally, these interest are interlinked within the frame of some disciplinary approaches (Public and Community Archeology, Public Engagement and Citizen Science) in which - to a certain extent - my interests find interconnections and reciprocal influences.
