OURANIA KOUKA
She is Professor for 'The Archaeology of Prehistoric Aegean' and Deputy Director of the Archaeological Research Unit of the University of Cyprus. Her teaching, fieldwork research, publications and research projects (Heraion of Samos, Liman Tepe in Izmir, Miletus etc.) are relevant with the Aegean, Anatolia, Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean in general.
She was born in 1962 in Piraeus, Greece. Undergraduate Studies at Ethnikon & Kapodistriakon University at Athens, Greece: B.A. in History and Archaeology (1985). Graduate studies in Prehistory and Protohistory, Classical and Christian Archaeology at the Ruprecht–Karls Universität Heidelberg (Ph.D. 1997 at the Institut für Ur– und Frühgeschichte und Vorderasiatische Archäologie).
She worked at the 19th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in Komotini, Thrace for the Archaeological and Ethnographical Research Project on Samothrace (1982–1989). She was a scientific assistant at the Institute for Prehistory, Protohistory and Archaeology of the Near East, University of Heidelberg (1991–1996). As the Head of the Group for Prehistory and Protohistory, Foundation of the Hellenic World–Internet Applications Systems she was responsible for the organization of the production, planning, research and composition of texts of web sites on all periods of the Aegean Prehistory (1997–2000). Furthermore, as a scientific collaborator of the programme ‘Corpus Artis Cycladicae’ under the auspices of the Archaeological Society at Athens and the scientific supervision of Prof. emer. Chr.G. Doumas, she worked on the organization of the documentation, publication and editing of volumes, including various categories of Early Cycladic artefacts stored at Museums and Private Collections in Greece (2000–2003).
She is the director of the excavations at Prehistoric Heraion on Samos (Sacred Road) (since 2009 under the auspices of the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut Athen), co–director of the Samos Archaeological Survey (since 2021) with the Ephorate of Samos and Ikaria, and member of the excavations of Ankara University at Liman Tepe, Izmir (since 2000). Previous fieldwork has been conducted at Agios Mamas/Nea Olynthos, Chalkidice (Freie Universitat Berlin), Tiryns, Argolid (Deutsches Archaologisches Institut Athen), Mikro Vouni, Samothrace and Archaeological and Ethnographic Survey on Samothrace (19th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, Komotini), Akrotiri, Thera (University of Athens) and Maroneia, Komotini (Archaeological Society at Athens). Study and sampling of pottery for publication and/or archaeometric analysis has been undertaken at Panormos on Naxos, Akrotiri on Thera, Liman Tepe, Bakla Tepe, Miletus, Ηeraion of Samos, Kastro-Tigani, Agathonisi, Pythagoreion Museum Plot, Lemba Archaeological Project, Cyprus (Lemba, Kissonerga–Mosphilia), and the National Archaeological Museum at Athens (Schliemann’s legacy pottery from Troy).
She taught ‘Archaeological Documentation’ at the College Year in Athens (2001–2002, 2002–2003). Furthermore, she was a visiting lecturer in: the Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Programme of the Institute of Mediterranean Studies and the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Crete on the ‘Management of Cultural Heritage’ (2002–2003); graduate programme of the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Crete (2003–2004); graduate programme of the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Cyprus, where she taught Prehistory of the Aegean and Anatolia (2003–2004, 2004–2005). Since September 2005 she belongs to the academic staff of the Department of History and Archaeology and the Archaeological Research Unit of the University of Cyprus for teaching the ‘Αrchaeology of Prehistoric Aegean’ as a Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and since 01.01.2024 as a Professor. Since 2001 she is supervising or is member of committees for supervision of Masters, PhD and Habilitation Theses in universities of Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Austria, Germany and France.
In 2008 she was elected as a Corresponding Member of the German Archaeological Institute (Römisch–Germanische Kommission, Frankfurt) for her initiation for interregional and interdisciplinary cooperation among European countries and between Greece and Turkey. In 2017–2020 she acted as a member of the Academic Advising Board of the Institute for Oriental and European Archaeology (OREA), Austrian Academy of Sciences. She is also member of the following associations and institutions: European Association of Archaeologists, West– und Süddeutscher Verband für Altertumsforschung e.V., Archaeological Institute of America, Institution of Theran Studies, ΙCOMOS Cyprus, Association of Cypriot Archaeologists, Association of Greek Archaeologist 'Eos', and the Society of Aegean Prehistory 'Αegeus'. Since 2015 she is member of the Council of the Archaeological Research Unit of the University of Cyprus. In 2020 she was elected as a member of the Archaeology Liaison Group of ARWA–The International Association for Archaeological Research in Western and Central Asia. In 2021 she was elected as a Member of the Acting Committee of ICOMOS–Cyprus.
Since September 2022 she is the Εditor of the International Series AEGAEON: Archaeology and History of the Aegean, Circum–Aegean and the SW Balkans, Brepols Publishers. Besides, she is a member of the Εditorial Βoard of the International Series LEMA: Levantine and Eastern Mediterranean Archaeology: The East, Brepols Publishers. Moreover, since 2021 she is member of the Scientific Committee of the Jahreshefte des Österreichischen Archäologischen Institutes in Wien (ÖJI), the Ergänzungshefte zu den Jahresheften (ErghÖJh), and the Sonderschriften des Österreichischen Archäologischen Instituts (SoSchrÖAI).
She is acting as a reviewer of articles of the periodicals Prähistorische Zeitschrift, Mitteilungen des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts Athen, Jahreshefte des Österreichischen Archäologischen Institutes in Wien, Jahresbericht für Mitteldeutsche Vorgeschichte–Sachsen–Anhalt, Oxford Journal of Archaeology, Journal of Mediterranean Archaeology, Opuscula Atheniensia, Quarterly International, Access Archaeology, The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS), TÜBA–AR, of numerous conference proceedings, as well as evaluator of research projects, habilitation theses, and academic positions.
She participated in or organized numerous conferences and has delivered public lectures and seminars on the Aegean, Anatolian and Cypriote Prehistory in Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, France, Spain, Belgium, United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, and the USA.
