Dr Savvas N. Georgiades is Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry, University of Cyprus and the Head of the Synthetic Organic Chemistry and Chemical Biology Laboratory (est. 2012). He has obtained his BSc in Chemistry from University of Cyprus (2001) and his PhD in Organic Chemistry and Chemical Biology from Harvard University (2006). After postdoctoral appointments at the Scripps Research Institute - La Jolla, California (Organic Synthesis, 2006-2007) and Imperial College London (Chemical Biology, 2007-2010), he worked for one year as independent Lecturer in Pharmacy and Chemistry at Kingston University (UK), before joining University of Cyprus in 2011. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2018 and to Associate Professor in 2024. His research expertise spans the areas of Organic Synthesis, Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry. His current research interests include: (a) Development of innovative synthetic technologies for C-H bond activation and C-C or C-X (X=heteroatom) bond formation, especially metal-mediated/catalyzed, and applications (SNG has been the Cyprus Representative on the Management Committee of COST Action CA15106, CHAOS: C-H Activation in Organic Synthesis); (b) Development of new DNA G-quadruplex ligands as a basis for new anti-cancer treatments and bio-imaging chemical agents (SNG has been a Member of COST Action CM1106: Chemical Approaches to Targeting Drug Resistance in Cancer Stem Cells); (c) Synthesis of biomaterials from nucleobase self-assembly for energy applications.
