ELENI VARVALOUKA-IOANNOU

As a native New Yorker she completed her undergraduate studies at New York University (BA in Journalism and Classical History, 1983). Graduate studies at New York University (MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, 1984) for which she graduated with honors. She taught English language and literature at The Grammar School, Nicosia from 1984 to 1992 and was Editor of the Yearbook. With the establishment of the University of Cyprus in 1992, she has been an English Language instructor first at the Department of Foreign Languages (1992-2005) and subsequently at the Language Center (2005- present). She played a key role in the creation of the Language Center as a member of the Committee for the establishment of the Language Center. Her contributions and dedication to the Language Center have continued as she has served as a board member for a vast number of years. As one of the four teachers hired in 1992, she and her colleagues created and developed the English Language Program which includes a series of advanced level English language courses and numerous ESP courses offered at the time. As more ESP courses were demanded, she designed and has taught English for Computer Science Majors. As a permanent senior member of staff she has taken on administrative responsibilities such as coordinator and supervisor. Her high ranking evaluations prove her dedication to her teaching and her students. Interests include culture and communication, sexist language, using DVD in the EFL/ESL classroom and materials development.
