The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is one of the 4 departments of the Faculty of Enfineering. The department started admiting undergraduate and postgraduate students in 2004. During its first years, the Department has been successful in initiating its academic programs, which have attracted high quality postgraduate and undergraduate students, and in establishing itself as a top rate research department in Electrical and Computed Engineering, as evidenced by several international research achievements of its faculty.
Our mission is to provide our students with the knowledge, ability, and skills to innovate, excel, and lead in the areas of electrical and computer engineering. We strive to keep abreast of the latest technological developments, to conduct world class research, and provide a focal point for development, growth, and entrepreneurship in our community and the region as a whole. We aspire to infuse in our students the values, attitudes, and vision that will facilitate the development of well rounded, educated, productive, and ethical individuals with strong character and life-long learning abilities.
During the first years in the life of the Department, one of the main goals is to recruit high quality faculty. The academic personnel hired in the ECE Department is a blend of experienced academics with significant research achievements and high potential junior faculty working in innovative research areas of Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering, which are at the forefront of technological developments. The experience and enthusiasm brought in by the new faculty was instrumental in the work that was required to set up the new ECE academic programs at the University of Cyprus, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Research plays a central role in the activities of the Department. Despite the relatively small number of faculty and the fact that the Department is still at an early stage in its development, we have the vision of creating an inspiring and productive environment, where high quality theoretical and applied research can be carried out. The Department has achieved some notable research distinctions. Specifically, only for the period September 2003- August 2005, there were 140 refereed publications, which correspond to about 7 publications per faculty per year. Of these publications, 41 were journal publications in some of the most prestigious journals in the field, including IEEE, OSA, SIAM, ACM, AIAA transactions and journals.
The Department has been successful in attracting significant research funding. Specifically, in the period September 2003-December 2006, the faculty in the Department were awarded close to 40 research projects, totaling more than 3,000,000 euro. It is important to note that about 80% of this research funding was from external sources, while 20% was from internal, competitive, University research programs. The high quality and visibility of the research program that is being carried out in the ECE Department, is evident by the prestigious positions that ECE faculty members hold, such as Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, Chair of the IEEE CSS Technical Committee on Intelligent Control, Vice President for Conferences of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, Members of International Program Committees for several conferences, etc.
Our Department has initiated various outreach activities to local high schools, local industry, as well as other professional organizations. The objective of these outreach efforts is fivefold: (1) to make the community aware of the presence of the new Department; (2) to establish collaborations with the local industry; (3) to promote the Department and the University of Cyprus as a favorite choice for Cypriot students who want to excel in their fields; (4) to educate the public on technological issues that are of current interest and that affect the quality of life of the local population; and (5) to contribute to the government efforts of enhancing the competitiveness of the Cyprus economy in high-technology enterprises.
The outreach activities of our Department include a number of publications, such as a newsletter, called "High Frequencies" (Ψηλές Συχνότητες), planned talks, meetings and workshops for the general public, annual technology competitions for high school students, bilateral agreements and several entrepreneurial activities.
