Ambassador of Mexico to Cyprus and Greece, Mr. Alejandro Garcia Moreno, visited Cyprus to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cyprus and Mexico (1974-2024), and in this context he also gave a lecture at the University of Cyprus, on Friday, February 23, 2024. In his speech entitled: “Geopolitical conditions of Mexico’s foreign policy” he focused on Mexico’s rich history and its geopolitical position in the world. He also highlighted issues of economic, geopolitical interest and also security issues.

Rector of the University of Cyprus, Professor Tasos Christofides at his welcoming speech said that it is indeed an honor to host assigned diplomats from all over the world to openly discuss about worldwide challenges, the relationships between our two countries and the future that awaits. “Academic diplomacy is at the heart of the University’s management, as we are well aware that relationships built on the grounds of education, research and collaboration for positive impact have strong and lasting foundations. Today we are honored to host the Ambassador of Mexico, his excellency, Alejandro Garcia Moreno, who will inform us about the rich history of Mexico and its geopolitical position in the world and share his insights and thoughts regarding matters of economic, safety and geopolitical interest. The University of Cyprus has established two synergies with Mexican Institutions (specifically with the Universidad Marista de Merida and the Universidad Anahuac). It is also worth mentioning that a small number of alumni are Mexican citizens (1 PhD Alumnus and 2 post-graduate students). While the numbers are small, considering the size of our country and the age of our university this shows the potential for further deepening our collaboration”.
