International Women in Engineering Day: Women-Engineers who Imagine, Design, Create.
June 19, 2025
Applications for Transfer to the University of Cyprus from candidates who have succeeded in International Examinations
June 24, 2025With great joy and pride, the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Cyprus organized on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, an Awards Ceremony to honor students and graduates who distinguished themselves for their excellence, academic performance, multifaceted contributions, and the skills they demonstrated during their studies. In collaboration with its four departments – Architecture, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing, and Civil and Environmental Engineering – and with the invaluable support of companies and organizations, the Faculty awarded monetary prizes and commendations this year totaling over €38,000.
At the start of the event, the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Marina Neophytou, extended a warm welcome, emphasizing the importance of the day:
“Tonight, we honor the persistence, dedication, and creativity of young people who never stopped dreaming, questioning, and building – both literally and symbolically – the world of tomorrow. Excellence is, of course, the reason for tonight’s gathering. But it is not the only value we celebrate. We also celebrate those who are not awarded tonight but gave their best. Who moved forward with effort, integrity, and collaboration. Because studies do not just cultivate excellence – they shape character and the consciousness of tomorrow’s citizens.”
The Rector of the University of Cyprus, Professor Tasos Christofides, warmly congratulated the awardees, emphasizing that the stories and journeys of the graduates are the best proof of the University’s excellence.
This year’s event also included an inspiring message from a 2019 graduate of the Faculty, Aristotelis Economides, who now works at Google DeepMind in California, contributing to the development of cutting-edge global artificial intelligence models such as Gemini and Veo. In his speech, Aristotelis conveyed powerful messages about life, initiative, and self-belief:
“No one is going to give you a ‘starting signal.’ Life has already started. Ask for what you want and let others decide whether you deserve it. The world is more malleable than you think. And very small – always act justly.”
Aristotelis’ journey is living proof that the knowledge cultivated at the University of Cyprus can transcend geographical boundaries and become a source of innovation, inspiration, and a driving force for global change.
During the ceremony, the Faculty warmly thanked all the sponsors who have consistently supported its mission and vision. The Dean noted:
“Tonight’s ceremony is indeed dedicated to our excellent students and graduates. But along with them, we also honor you – the people and organizations who stand by young individuals, enhancing their potential and opening paths where there may have been obstacles. With your support, excellence becomes experience. It becomes a scholarship, an opportunity, an inspiration. Your generosity is an act of trust and investment in the people of our country.”
As a token of appreciation, each sponsor received a commemorative gift – a student creation – a symbolic poster designed as part of a competition celebrating 20 years of academic life and student experience at the Faculty of Engineering. The poster captures, through the students’ eyes, the journey, evolution, and vision of the Faculty.
In conclusion, the Faculty's vision was highlighted – to fully leverage the unprecedented opportunities provided by its relocation to new, state-of-the-art and iconic facilities. The aim is to strengthen the transfer of knowledge, expertise, and innovation to Cyprus’s industrial and productive ecosystem, while forging a meaningful connection with society and the economy. In a milestone year, as the Faculty marks 25 years since its establishment and over two decades of academic activity, international recognitions affirm its upward trajectory: ranked first in Cyprus and Greece, and among the top 50 engineering faculties in Europe, according to ENGIRank 2024.
