D. Optional Courses

(a) For all students of the Diploma in Modern Languages and European Studies, the obligation to enrol in optional courses (free elective course) is no longer in force (students are not obliged to enrol in free choice optional courses).

(b) Exception: Only the students in their fifth and sixth year of study of the Diploma in Modern Languages and European Studies must continue to enrol as usual in free choice optional courses (12 ECTS (15 ECTS for the combination English-German) until the end of their studies (for the academic year 2022-2023) in order to fulfil the requirements of the Diploma.

In accordance with the decision of the Senate (no. 2/2006, § 3.9.2.1), any student who attends public lectures, seminars or conferences organised by the University’s Departments, or by the Center for Teaching and Learning (KEDIMA), (20 hours of intensive courses = 1 ECTS), may earn 2 ECTS in total within 4 years of studies. The Department recommends that all first year students obtain the Bulletin from MERIMNA. Once the 2 ECTS have been completed, students submit their Report Card to MERIMNA, which validates these ECTS for the MET 000 Seminars and Conferences course.

E. Diploma Minor

Students who wish to do so may, in parallel with the major in Modern Languages and European Studies, follow a Minor programme in European Studies. In addition to the courses common to both pathways, which are recognised by the Departmental Council upon simple request*, students must complete 5 additional FES courses, each one taught in French.

Students of the English-German language combination do not have the possibility to enrol in the Secondary (Minor) programme in French Studies.

Students interested in the interdepartmental minor programme in Gender Studies may consult the website of the Department of English Studies which coordinates the programme.
