Students in the Modern Languages and European Studies programme will develop advanced skills in French and\/or English and\/or German and\/or Spanish, and will study European thought and culture and film studies in depth. They will acquire a sound knowledge of the humanities and social sciences as well as political science, in particular on topics related to European studies. They will be able to pursue their careers in professional fields where these specialisations are required, e.g. European institutions, national and foreign public services, cultural organisations, foundations, companies, NGOs, etc.<\/p>\n

OBTAINING THE DIPLOMA OF MODERN LANGUAGES AND EUROPEAN STUDIES<\/strong><\/p>\n

To obtain the French Language and Literature degree, students must complete courses totalling a minimum of 240 ECTS. These courses include: 1) fixed and additional mandatory courses, taught in the two languages chosen by the student, 2) courses taught by the Department of English Studies, History, Political and Social Sciences, Law, and the Language Centre.<\/p>\n

Students of the Diploma in Modern Languages and European Studies enrol in a combination of two languages: French-English, French-German, or French-Spanish.<\/p>\n

Each semester, this list is supplemented by additional mandatory courses in European thought and culture and the visual arts. These courses are announced with their respective codes at the beginning of each semester.<\/p>\n

B. Additional Mandatory Courses (examples)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Additional Mandatory Courses are not courses freely chosen by students. These are\u00a0selected by the Department,\u00a0which publishes at the beginning of every semester the list of the proposed courses for the semester. Students must register for the Additional Mandatory Courses that correspond to their semester programme (see\u00a0Semester Programmes<\/a>).<\/em><\/p>\n

For exemption from foreign language courses, please contact the Language Centre.<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

In accordance with the decision of the Senate (no. 2\/2006, \u00a7 3.9.2.1), any student who attends public lectures, seminars or conferences organised by the University’s Departments, or by the\u00a0Center for Teaching and Learning (KEDIMA)<\/a>, (20 hours of intensive courses = 1 ECTS), may earn 2 ECTS in total within 4 years of studies. The Department recommends that all first year students obtain the Bulletin from\u00a0MERIMNA<\/a>. Once the 2 ECTS have been completed, students submit their Report Card to MERIMNA, which validates these ECTS for the\u00a0MET 000 Seminars and Conferences<\/em>\u00a0course.<\/p>\n

D. Diploma Minor<\/strong><\/p>\n

Students who wish to do so may, in parallel with the major in Modern Languages and European Studies, follow a\u00a0Minor programme<\/a>\u00a0in European Studies. In addition to the courses common to both pathways, which are recognised by the Departmental Council upon\u00a0simple request*<\/strong>, students must complete 5 additional FES courses, each one taught in French.<\/p>\n

Students of the English-German language combination do not have the possibility to enrol in the Secondary (Minor) programme in French Studies.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Students interested in the interdepartmental minor programme in\u00a0Gender Studies<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0may consult the website of the\u00a0Department of English Studies<\/a>\u00a0which coordinates the programme.<\/p>\n
