The main aim of this programme is to equip students with the skills required to succeed in academic, professional and social settings. Students engage collaboratively in the completion of pedagogically and linguistically driven tasks in order to develop and enhance their knowledge of English for use in a wide variety of domains. Students, enrolled in the first level of English Language Studies (LAN 100), are expected to be approximately at the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Except for cases where courses are a compulsory requirement by departments, all English language courses can also be taken as free electives, provided that the prerequisites (if any) are met.

Courses

LAN 100: General Advanced English (5 ECTS)

This General Advanced English course introduces students to the English language and skills required in a university setting. It is specifically designed to help students develop competency in speaking, reading, writing, and listening in an academic setting and to understand the importance of sociolinguistic aspects of the language. Whilst developing and improving all language areas, the course also promotes 21st century skills such as critical thinking, creativity, problem solving and digital and information literacy-key skills that are transferable to the academic world and the world of work.

Elements of this course are aligned with the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

LAN 101 Academic English (5 ECTS)
Prerequisite: LAN 100 or equivalent.

This course helps students to further develop their proficiency in written and spoken academic communication in English.  
It is designed to help students improve the quality of their academic presentations in English in both content and delivery. All core skills incorporated in the course will assist students to perform effectively in their academic lives and prepare them for the workplace.

The language proficiency level of this course is aligned with the B2+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). As of Spring 2022, students who complete LAN 101 Academic English with an overall grade of 7 or higher will receive a Foreign Language Certificate at the B2+ level of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR) from the University of Cyprus.
LAN 102 English for Architecture (5 ECTS)
Prerequisite: LAN 100 or equivalent.

This course is for students of architecture who need to develop specialised English language skills to function effectively in their field. Students will increase their knowledge of architecture-related terminology in English so that they are able to express themselves with clarity, fluency and spontaneity-traits that they will use in the academic context and that will serve as a catalyst for future use in their careers. 

The language proficiency level of this course is aligned with the B2+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). As of Spring 2023, students who complete LAN 102 English for Architecture with an overall grade of 7 or higher will receive a Foreign Language Certificate at the B2+ level of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR) from the University of Cyprus.
LAN 103 English for Biomedical Sciences (5 ECTS)
Prerequisite: LAN 100 or equivalent.

This course is for students of the Department of Biological Sciences and the Medical School who need to develop specialised English language skills to function effectively in their field. The course focuses on the development of all language skills (reception and production of oral and written language, interaction, and mediation) with particular emphasis on comprehending and producing scientific textsStudents will increase their knowledge of biology and medicine -related terminology in English so they are able to express themselves with a growing clarity, fluency and spontaneity-traits that they will use in the academic context and that will serve as a catalyst for future use in their careers.

The language proficiency level of this course is aligned with the B2+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). As of Spring 2023, students who complete LAN 103 English for Biomedical Sciences with an overall grade of 7 or higher will receive a Foreign Language Certificate at the B2+ level of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR) from the University of Cyprus.
LAN 104 English for Technical Purposes (5 ECTS)

Prerequisite: LAN 100 or equivalent.

 

TThis course is for undergraduate students of the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering who need to develop specialized English language skills in order to perform effectively in their field. The course focuses on the development of all language skills with an emphasis on comprehending and producing written material related to the field of Engineering. Students will increase their knowledge of engineering-related terminology in English.

The language proficiency level of this course is aligned with the B2+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). As of Spring 2023, students who complete LAN 104 English for Technical Purposes with an overall grade of 7 or higher will receive a Foreign Language Certificate at the B2+ level of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR) from the University of Cyprus.

LAN 109 English for Law (5 ECTS)
Prerequisite: LAN 100 or equivalent except for Law students.

This course is for undergraduate students studying in the field of Law. It aims at helping them to use English efficiently during their academic studies and later in their lives as qualified lawyers. The course focuses on activating language skills, through collaborative task-based work. Examples of tasks include delivering oral presentations, reading and writing legal documents, and listening and speaking about legal matters.

LAN 111 English for Computer Science (5 ECTS)
Prerequisite: LAN 100 or equivalent.

This course is for students of the Department of Computer Science who need to develop specialized English language skills in order to perform effectively in their field. The course focuses on the development of all language skills with an emphasis on comprehending and producing written material related to the field of Computer Science.Students are given the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of computer science-related terminology in English.

The language proficiency level of this course is aligned with the B2+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). As of Spring 2023, students who complete LAN 111 English for Computer Science with an overall grade of 7 or higher will receive a Foreign Language Certificate at the B2+ level of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR) from the University of Cyprus.
LAN 112 English for Physics (5 ECTS)
Prerequisite: LAN 100 or equivalent

This course is for students of the Department of Physics who need to develop specialized English language skills in order to perform effectively in their field. The course focuses on the development of all language skills with an emphasis on comprehending and producing written material related to the field of Physics. Students are given the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of physics- related terminology in English.

The language proficiency level of this course is aligned with the B2+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). As of Spring 2023, students who complete LAN 112 English for Physics with an overall grade of 7 or higher will receive a Foreign Language Certificate at the B2+ level of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR) from the University of Cyprus.
LAN 200 English for Academic Purposes-Advanced Level (5 ECTS)
Prerequisite: LAN 101 or equivalent.


This course helps students not only to improve their knowledge of academic English, but also investigate and build specific 21st century skills in areas such as media literacy and global awareness. Traditional and digital media alongside articles from academic journals will be exploited as source material in this course. Students will further refine their critical thinking and digital literacy skills when working together on various tasks and assignments.

The language proficiency level of this course is aligned with the B2+/C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). As of Fall 2022, students who complete LAN 200 English for Academic Purposes-Advanced Level with an overall grade of 7 or higher will receive a Foreign Language Certificate at the B2+/C1 level of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR) from the University of Cyprus.

LAN 201 English for Public and Business Administration School (5 ECTS)
Prerequisite: LAN 101 or equivalent.

This course aims to assist students in preparing for English language business related opportunities that they will face both at university and in the workplace. Students will develop business communication skills and strategies for speaking and writing in a clear, succinct manner. Emphasis will also be placed on improving reading and listening comprehension through exposure to a broad variety of contemporary business related topics. Additionally, students will enhance their speaking skills by giving business related oral presentations.

LAN 202 English for Public Speaking (5 ECTS)
Prerequisite: LAN 101 or equivalent except for European studies students.

This course is designed to improve communicative skills in English in an academic setting, through a combination of theory and practice. In order to develop proficiency in verbal communication, students complete a variety of activities, both individual and group, and are evaluated by their peers and their instructor according to task type. Course materials are drawn from an extensive selection of current printed matter, online resources, video and podcasts. One of the aims of this course is to encourage students to begin to recognize the parameters, within which their own culture operates, and understand the important role that intercultural skills play when engaging in public speaking activities.
The learning outcomes, tasks and assessment of this course are aligned with the C1+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
LAN 209 Advanced English for Global Communication (5 ECTS)
Prerequisite: LAN 101 or equivalent.

This course is for students of Economics and other disciplines who aim at mastering their skills and competencies in English and enriching their vocabulary and terminology at an advanced level. The course encourages active participation and cooperative learning by engaging students in studying authentic material on economic, international and multicultural topics. Task-based language learning promotes written and oral production in the target language. Upon completion of this course students are expected to communicate and interact with fluency and clarity in the target language in academic, social and professional contexts.

The language proficiency level of this course is aligned with the B2+/C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). As of Spring 2023, students who complete LAN 209 Advanced English for Global Communication with an overall grade of 7 or higher will receive a Foreign Language Certificate at the B2+/C1 level of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR) from the University of Cyprus.
LAN 212 English for the Workplace (5 ECTS)
Prerequisite: LAN 101 or equivalent.

The course prepares learners for the workplace by introducing, developing and honing a set of transferable language-related skills, pivotal from the stage of searching and applying for a job, to entering and practising in the workplace. in this hands-on course, students will exercise all language skills using a wide range of authentic material. Learners will receive ample practice and opportunities, to become familiar with and refine the real-life tasks and skills introduced. 

The language proficiency level of this course is aligned with the C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). As of Spring 2022, students who complete LAN 212 English for the Workplace with an overall grade of 7 or higher will receive a Foreign Language Certificate at the C1 level of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR) from the University of Cyprus.
