Charalampos Charalampous

Charalampos obtained a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Commercial Law, with distinction from University of Leicester in 2017. He completed his undergraduate degree in Law (LLB – 4 year course) at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2015. Meanwhile in 2016 Charalampos has been called to the Cyprus Bar Association.

He is part of the law firm’s litigation department that he is currently working at in Nicosia and his main area of focus is Banking Law, Public and Administrative Law whilst also having considerable experience in Family Law.
Charalampos appears before the District Courts as well as the Administrative Court, the Family Court and the Tenders Review Authority.

His research focuses on the derivative action at common law. He focuses on the common law exceptions that have been introduced against the Foss v Harbottle common law rule by the Commonwealth Courts in an effort to revise the current legislation in Cyprus and introduce the optimal statutory derivative action scheme for Cyprus. He is conducting his PhD degree under the supervision of Professor Nikitas Hatzimihail.

Kyriaki Charalambous

Kyriaki is a PhD student at the Law Department of the University of Cyprus under the supervision of Associate Professor Aristoteles Constantinides. Her research focuses on the complex relationship between criminal justice and human rights on the specific issue of violence against women and domestic violence. Her research interests include feminist theory and legal feminism, gender issues and intersecting inequalities.

 

Kyriaki graduated from the Department of Law of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and she obtained an MA in Gender Studies with distinction from the University of Cyprus. Her MA thesis was titled: “The Discoursive Formulation of Violence Against Women: the Case of Rape Crime in the Legal Discourse in Cyprus”. She also obtained an LLM in Criminal Justice & Human Rights with distinction from University of Cyprus. Her LLM thesis was titled: “Domestic Violence and Reparations: ECtHR’s practice and the need to focus on a victim centered and systemic changes approach”.

Kyriaki is working as a lawyer and she was admitted to the Cyprus Bar Association in 2011.

Nicoletta Epaminonda

Nicoletta is a PhD candidate at the Department of Law, University of Cyprus and was admitted to the programme in 2018 under the supervision of Professor Tatiana Synodinou. She has completed the literature review and resesrch proposal and is currently happily writing away! Her PhD research investigates the effectiveness of Trade Secrets Directive in common law countries within the European Union. Nicoletta obtained her LLM with Distinction from the University of Durham (St John’s College) in 2012 and her BA in Law with a 2:1 from the University of Cambridge (Girton College) in 2011. Her research interests relate to Intellectual Property and pharmaceutical/regulatory law. She is also a practising lawyer.

Nafsika Gregoriou

Nafsika is currently working as a litigation lawyer and she is a member of the Cyprus Bar Association since  2020. She graduated with LLB (hons) from Nottingham Trent University and she holds also an LLM, in Human Rights Law from Queen Mary University of London.

 

She is pursuing her PhD under the supervision of Associate Professor Charalambos Papacharalampous and her research focuses on juvenile delinquency. She is aiming to provide a more ‘child friendly’ system with its core the rehabilitation of children. Her research interests include criminal law, children’s rights law, human rights law and criminology.

 

 

Athena Herodotou

Athena is a PhD candidate at the Law Department of the University of Cyprus researching the obligation of non-recognition of situations created by serious breaches of international law and its application at sea, under the supervision of Associate Professor Aristoteles Constantinides. Previously, she has worked as a research assistant at the Law Department of the University of Cyprus in the fields of public international law, constitutional law, employment law and human rights law. Currently, she an Advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and to the Office of the Law Commissioner on international treaties. Her research interests include public international law, international law of the sea, law of treaties and issues of sovereignty.

Athena obtained a Master of Laws (LLM) in Public International Law with distinction from the University of Nottingham. She completed her undergraduate degree in Law (LLB) with distinction at the University of Cyprus.

Iosifina Ioannou

Iosifina is a PhD researcher at the Department of Law of the University of Cyprus since September 2020, under the supervision of Associate Professor, Charis Papacharalambous. Her doctoral thesis comparatively explores the rule of hearsay evidence and its admissibility in criminal cases under Cyprus law and jurisprudence- a crucial evidential issue, both theoretically and practically.

Iosifina is an advocate at Elias A. Stephanou LLC since 2019, following the successful completion of her pupillage at the firm. Her practice focuses on wide range of criminal offences. She is a Barrister-at-Law, admitted to the Bar of England and Wales by the Honorable Society of Gray’s Inn, in 2018.  Iosifina admitted to the Cyprus Bar Association in 2019.

Prior to joining the firm, Iosifina graduated in 2017 from Nottingham Law School. In 2018, she undertook the Barrister Professional Training Course (BPTC) and within the same year she received her Masters in Law.  During her studies Iosifina, gained hands-on experience undertaking several Pro-Bono cases by attending Courts and Tribunals as well as working in law firms in England and Cyprus. At the University she took part in mock trials and mock applications organized by the University, the Bar Society and the Inn of Courts, receiving Advocacy prizes.

 

 

Sofoklis Karasamanis

Sofoklis is a PhD student at the Department of Law of the University of Cyprus under the supervision of Professor Tatiana Synodinou. His research project examines the topic of employee protection under company law (Cypriot, European and common-law jurisdictions’ company law).

Sofoklis obtained a BA in Classics from the Department of Classics and Philosophy of the University of Cyprus and a Master of Studies in Modern Languages from the University of Oxford (Oriel College). He obtained an LLB from Queen Mary, University of London and an LLM in European Commercial Law from the University of Cyprus.

 

Sofoklis is a Lawyer of the Republic at the Law Office of the Republic.

Louiza Kofina

Louiza is a Ph.D. candidate at the Law Department of the University of Cyprus since September 2019, under the supervision of Assistant Professor Thomas Papadopoulos. Her research focuses on the possible intersection between competition and data protection law, under a European and American perspective.

Louiza obtained a Postgraduate Degree (LL.M.) in European Union Law, with specialization in European Competition Law with distinction from the Open University of Cyprus (2019). Moreover, she completed her Undergraduate Studies in Law (LL.B.) with distinction at the University of Cyprus (2015).

Louiza was admitted to the Cyprus Bar Association in 2016 and she is currently working as a lawyer.

Kyriakos Kyriakides

Kyriakos is a PhD candidate at the Law Department of the University of Cyprus under the supervision of Professor Nikitas Hatzimihail. His doctoral research focuses on the role of the judicial discretion in civil justice.     

Kyriakos is a qualified lawyer in Cyprus from 2016 and works at Savvas Kyriakides law firm in Nicosia. He obtained an undergraduate degree in Law (LL.B.) from the University of Cyprus and a postgraduate degree in Law (LL.M.) with specialisation in commercial law, from the University of Cambridge.

Antonis Mintzis

Antonis Mintzis is a PhD student in the Law Department at the University of Cyprus since September 2020 under the supervision of Associate Professor Charalambos Papacharalambous. His research focuses on the criminal treatment of drug addicts in the Cypriot judiciary. In particular, his study seeks to find alternative ways to address these offenders through treatment. Antonis is a law scholar alumnus from the University of Neapolis, where he received an LLB, in 2017. He holds a Master’s degree (MSc) in “Criminal Law and Addiction” from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, majoring in “Legal and Therapeutic Treatment of addicts” and holds a Master’s Degree (LLM) from University of Cyprus “Criminal Justice and Human Rights”. Within the framework of his postgraduate studies, he conducted a thesis on “The evaluation of the current legislative framework and legal system of Cyprus in relation to drug addicts. Establishment of Drug Treatment Courts”. He is currently publishing an article entitled “Bridge between Criminal Justice and Therapeutic Communities (2020). After completing his legal practice in 2018, Antonis is a registered lawyer and is mainly active in criminal cases.

Ioanna Neofytou

Ioanna is a PhD student at the Department of Law of the University of Cyprus, under the supervision of Associate Professor Charalampos Papacharalampous. Her research explores the intersection between neuroscience and law and aims to bridge the philosophy of punishment and the judicial practice in sentencing. In particular, her research aims at assessing the role of neuroscientific evidence in the formation of the theory of punishment and the anti-crime policy with regard to dangerousness.

 

Ioanna obtained a Law Degree (LLB – four year course) and a Master of Laws (LLM – two year course) in Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure from National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. During her postgraduate studies, she wrote her thesis on the topic of European Arrest Warrant in relation to Corruption Crimes with distinction. In 2016-2017, she was a trainee lawyer and a member of the Athens Bar Association. Currently, Ioanna is a lawyer, member of the Cyprus Bar Association and she mainly deals with criminal cases.

Elvira Pallikarou

Elvira is a Ph.D student at the Law Department of the University of Cyprus as of September 2020, under the supervision of Professor Nikitas E. Hatzimihail. Her research focuses on the evaluation of scientific testimony given by expert witnesses in civil courts.

Having completed her Undergraduate studies at the University of Cyprus
(LL.B), Elvira followed Postgraduate Studies at Queen Mary University of London and obtained her LLM in Medical Law with Distinction. Her research during her postgraduate studies focused on the gravity of scientific testimony given by psychiatrists as medical professionals before the Civil Courts.

Elvira worked in litigation until 2019 when she obtained a position at the Legal Department of Parliamentary Committees Secretariat of the House of Representatives.

Constantinos Panteli

Constantinos is a PhD canditate at the Law Department of the University of Cyprus under the supervision of Associate Professor Aristoteles Constantinides. His research focuses on the status of the Sovereign Base Areas of Dhekelia and Akrotiri under International Law. His interests are the Law of Treaties, Territorial Sovereignty and the Right to Self-determination.

 

Constantinos is currently working as a lawyer in Orphanides, Christofides & Co L.L.C. He was admitted to the Cyprus Bar Association in 2017. He obtained an L.L.M. in Public International Law from the University of Nottingham in 2016. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Cyprus with distinction in 2015.

Stephanie Papaioannou

Stephanie is a PhD Candidate under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Constantinos Kombos. Her PhD research focuses on Public Law (Constitutional Law and Administrative Law) and Comparative Law. The purpose of her thesis will be to examine legal entities in Cypriot public law, with an emphasis on the public-private divide and with a parallel comparative review on how other jurisdictions are handling the entities that can be categorized within a mid-category.

Stephanie obtained a Postgraduate Degree (LL.M.) in International Law, with Specialization in International Economic Law, Private International Law and Comparative Law, with Distinction from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She completed her Undergraduate Studies in Law (LL.B.) at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. During her studies she received scholarships and grants (Cyprus State Scholarship Foundation, A.G. Leventis Foundation). 

Stephanie is also a litigation lawyer. In 2011 she was called to Thessaloniki’s Bar Association as an Advocate before the Greek Courts of First Instance. In 2014 she was called to the Cyprus Bar Association and received an award from the Law Office of the Republic for attaining the highest grade in 2 out of 10 examinations. She now heads the Litigation Department of a law firm, also dealing with Administrative and labor law cases and international commercial matters. She speaks Greek, English and Italian.

 

 

Katerina Sofokleous

Katerina is a PhD student in the Law Department of the University of Cyprus under the supervision of Associate Professor Charalambos Papacharalambous. Her doctoral dissertation examines: “Theory of Criminalization: Definition of Criminal Liability in Relation to the Preventive Function and the Fundamental Principles of Criminal Law in Modern Society with specific references to Cypriot Law”. The theory of criminalization is fundamental for the legitimation of the criminal responsibility of individuals in a state. Therefore, she this analysis is fundamental, especially on the basis of the Cypriot legal system.

Katerina is a Lawyer – Legal Advisor, member of the Cyprus Bar Association. Currently, Katerina works at the lawfirm Elias A. Stefanou LLC and actives, mainly, in the fields of Criminal Law. Katerina holds a master’s degree in LLM – Criminal Law and Criminal Justice from the University of Edinburgh. At the same time she holds an undergraduate degree in law from the University of Cyprus with honors and as the top of her class. Throughout her studies and work, as a Lawyer, she has been writing articles related to legal issues. She has collaborated on a research level with her deputy and supervising professor, Charalambos Papacharalambous and with Andreas Kapardis. Her research interests are in criminal law and criminal justice.

Emily Sotiriou

Emily is a PhD candidate under the supervision of Assist. Prof. Costas Paraskeva. Her research concentrates on the imposition of time-limits by the European Court of Human Rights for furthering the speedy execution of its judgments. It seeks to explore the Court’s competence in this area, the extent to which it has developed this practice and its possible implications on the execution of its judgments.

 

Since 2018 she has been employed as a lawyer with the European Court of Human Rights. Her work entails the examination of applications lodged against Cyprus, in accordance with the European Convention on Human Rights.  Prior to that, she worked as a fully qualified lawyer in Cyprus, specialising in the areas of public and administrative law. Between 2013 and 2018 she worked as a part-time research assistant to Dr. Costas Paraskeva.

Elias Stephanou

Elias Andrea Stephanou is a PhD researcher at the Department of Law of the University of Cyprus since September 2018, under the supervision of Associate Professor, Charis Papacharalambous. His thesis comparatively explores the admissibility of illegally obtained evidence in criminal cases under Cyprus law and jurisprudence- a crucial evidential issue, both theoretically and practically.

 

Elias published a number of articles regarding sentencing, cybercrime, witness protection and many other areas of Criminal law and procedure in Cyprus, as well he is the co-author with Professor Andros Kapardis of “Sentencing in Cyprus” (2003). Currently they are preparing the new edition of the book on Sentencing. Elias provides expert consultation in criminal matters, such as regarding Mutual Recognition, Cross border crime, Conflicts of Jurisdiction in the Commission of the European Union and in the Council of Europe and various clients. He founded in 2013 the law firm Elias A. Stephanou LLC. Between 2002 and 2008 he was a public prosecutor. Currently he handles complex, high profile criminal cases, and provides consultation regarding criminal aspects to companies and highnet individuals.

 

In 1999 Elias graduated from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and in 2001 he obtained an LLM in Criminal Law and Justice by Leicester University. Elias is a visiting lecturer at the Law School of the University of Cyprus (Evidence Law). Furthermore, Elias’ academic experience includes regular lecturing of Criminal Law and Evidence Law at the Law School of the University of Nicosia, lecturing of Criminal Justice at the Open University, as well as speaker at the Police Academy regarding criminal law-oriented matters.

Stamatina Stergiou

Stamatina is a PhD student at University off Cyprus under the supervision of Associate Prof. Constantinos Κombos. Her PhD is on EU Public Law and focuses on the principle of Effective Judicial Protection as ensured by the national courts and the CJEU. She is also interested in Administrative Law and Public International law.

Stamatina holds a bachelor- (Ptychion) in Public Administration (Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences- Athens), a Bachelor in Law (University of Strasbourg- France), a Master (Maitrise) in European and International Law (University of Strasbourg- France) and an LLM in International Law (University of Central Lancashire). During her studies she was granded with various scholarships (State Scholarships Foundation-IKY, N. Papadimitriou Foundation, Uclan Cyprus, University of Cyprus  full scholarship for her PhD studies).

Stamatina is also a member of the Cyprus Bar Association and she has worked as a legal trainee at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, at the Permanent Representation of Greece to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg as well as in Law offices in Greece and Cyprus. She speaks Greek, French, English, German and she is a beginner in Spanish.

Christos Stroppos

Christos is a PhD candidate at University of Cyprus since October 2018 under the supervision of Associate Professor, Mr. Constantinos Kombos.

His PhD research examines the role of the notion of the autonomy of EU legal order in its relationship with international and national legal orders and its positive and/or negative impact in the development of a uniform minimum standard of protection and/or effective protection of fundamental rights  in Europe.

Christos obtained his Master Degrees (LL.M) from the Law Department of University of Munich in Germany. He completed his undergraduate studies at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

Christos works as a Lawyer at Tassos Papadopoulos & Associates LLC in Nicosia.

 

 

Maria Theocharous

Maria is a PhD candidate at the Law Department of the University of Cyprus under the supervision of Associate Professor Aristoteles Constantinides. Her research focuses on the jurisdiction of Cyprus as port State under International and Domestic Law. Her research interests include Public International Law and International Shipping Law.

Maria is currently working as a lawyer. She was admitted to the Cyprus Bar Association in 2017. She obtained a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Shipping Law from the Queen Mary University of London in 2018 and a Law Degree (LLB) from the University of Cyprus in 2016.
