International distinction for the postdoctoral researcher of the Law Department\u00a0<\/span>of the University of Cyprus Tina <\/span>Stavrinaki<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

She was e<\/span>lected Vice-Chair of the UN Commi<\/span>ttee<\/span> on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr Tina <\/span>Stavrinaki<\/span>, post-doctoral researcher “<\/span>Onisilos<\/span>” at the Law Department of the University of Cyprus, was elected Vice-Chair of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD).\u00a0<\/span>Dr Tina <\/span>Stavrinaki<\/span> serves on the Commi<\/span>ttee<\/span> as an independent expert from January 2020 to January 2024, with the right to be re-elected. <\/span>During<\/span> the recent <\/span>session<\/span> of the Commi<\/span>ttee<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> experts from the Western Europe and other countries <\/span>regional group<\/span> selected Dr. Tina <\/span>Stavrinaki<\/span> for the position of Vice<\/span>-Chair <\/span>for the next two years. The Commi<\/span>ttee follows a rotation system and<\/span> is <\/span>currently <\/span>chaired by the Latin American and Caribbean <\/span>group<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>In addition, Dr Tina <\/span>Stavrinaki<\/span> has been commissioned to draft the General Recommendation for Combating Racial Discrimination in the Right to Health. The Commi<\/span>ttee<\/span>‘s General Recommendations provide guidance to the <\/span>currently <\/span>182 States Parties to the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.\u00a0<\/span>Dr <\/span>Stavrinaki<\/span> holds a PhD in International Law from the University of Paris 2 Panth\u00e9on <\/span>Assas<\/span> and completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the Law Department of the University of Cyprus <\/span>on the subject<\/span> o<\/span>f<\/span> hate<\/span> speech and hate crimes<\/span> (<\/span>HateLawPractice<\/span>) <\/span>under the supervision of<\/span> Associate Professor of International Law and <\/span>Human Rights Aristotel<\/span>e<\/span>s <\/span>C<\/span>onstantinid<\/span>e<\/span>s<\/span>. Dr <\/span>Stavrinaki’s<\/span> research led, among other things, to the <\/span>drafting<\/span> of guidelines on the establishment of an <\/span>O<\/span>bservatory for hate crimes in Cyprus, which were given for consultation to civil society organizations.\u00a0<\/span>Dr S<\/span>tavrinaki<\/span> will continue her academic career at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, where she <\/span>was hired as<\/span> an Assistant Professor of International Human Rights Law <\/span>as of<\/span> September 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
