Welcome to the website of the interdisciplinary programme of the University of Cyprus, entitled “Lactating Breasts: Motherhood and Breastfeeding in Antiquity and Byzantium (4th century BCE-7th century CE)”.
The programme is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and the Republic of Cyprus through the Research and Innovation Foundation (Programme "Excellence Hubs") and is conducted by the University of Cyprus, with the participation of the Pediatric Society of Cyprus and the Cyprus Breastfeeding Association “Gift for Life”. The research team consists of academic researchers from the University of Cyprus and other international universities (Cardiff University, Case Western Reserve University, Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation, Open University of Israel, University of Edinburgh, University of Verona, Harvard University).
The programme has a twofold aim: a) to provide fundamental historical research on past societies and b) to influence contemporary debates, practices and policies concerning sustainability, motherhood, and breastfeeding.
