The purpose of quantitative research is to explore the relationship between various factors. Independently or in addition to the quantitative techniques, qualitative research aims to explore and extend the understanding of social phenomena. Enabling the researcher to collect rich information about the subject in question, qualitative research is an appropriate methodology to answer questions related to the "Why?" and "How?" of certain phenomena. The qualitative approach is an essentially exploratory method that targets the emergence of new formulations and theoretical models rather than testing hypotheses or generalizing to a larger population. The main advantage of qualitative methods is the flexibility that characterizes the research process.

Qualitative research is an appropriate methodological choice for in-depth exploration of representations, attitudes, perceptions, motivations emotions and behaviors of individuals. The aim of the qualitative investigation is not simply to describe an attitude or behavior, but to gain a holistic understanding. The qualitative study explores the experiences of individuals and the subjective meanings that constitute them, always focusing on the broader social and cultural (values ​​and ideology) context. The main characteristics of the qualitative approach are the small sample of participants and the analysis of discourse (including written form).


The mixed methods approach combines quantitative and qualitative methods in the design of the methodology, in a way that maximizes the advantages of each method and minimizes the weaknesses of each method.
