Nayia Kamenou is a Lecturer in the Department of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Cyprus. She completed a joint BA (Hons) in Political Science – Thomas Hunter Honors Program Degree at Hunter College, City University of New York, an MSc in Human Rights at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a Ph.D. in European Studies at King’s College London. Dr Kamenou was the recipient of the Cyprus State Scholarship Foundation scholarship from 2001 to 2011. She also received the King’s College London Graduate School Studentship and Fee Waiver (2007 -2010). Prior to joining the University of Cyprus as a Lecturer, she worked as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Applied Sciences at De Montfort University Leicester, where she served as the Deputy Director of the Media Discourse Centre. Dr Kamenou also completed a visiting research fellowship at the Centre for Hellenic Studies, King’s College London and worked as an Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Cyprus, as well as at the European University Cyprus and at the University of Nicosia. She also worked as an Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of European and International Studies at King's College London. In 2021, Dr Kamenou received the International Political Science Association "Wilma Rule" Award for the Best Research on Gender and Politics. Her work has appeared in European Journal of Women’s Studies, Sexualities, International Feminist Journal of Politics, Women's Studies International Forum, Social Sciences and in edited volumes. She has also authored/co-authored several NGO publications.

Dr Kamenou’s research is highly interdisciplinary and cuts across numerous social sciences fields like political science, sociology, Europeanization studies, sexuality studies, gender theory, social movements studies and queer theory. Her work is firmly committed to political and social concerns and to the development of possible interventions for their resolution. Dr Kamenou’s main research interests are:
  • the interrelations between nationhood, ethnic identities, gender and sexuality
  • the impact of Europeanization on LGBTIQ+ identities, rights and political mobilization
  • trans* law and policy formation and its impact on trans* subjectivities, identities and politics
  • the role of women and gender in the formation of political agency and political identities in political parties and in movement parties
  • the role of women and gender in peace-building processes
