Life Around the Courts: Legal Practices of Ethnic and Religious Pluralism in Egypt<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>The Department of History and Archaeology at the University of Cyprus has secured external funding of \u00a327,486 (approximately \u20ac32,500) from the British Library\u2019s Endangered Archives Programme (EAP) for the implementation of a new research project. The project, titled Life Around the Courts: Legal Practices of Ethnic and Religious Pluralism in Egypt, is being carried out by Dr. Eftychia Mylona, a postdoctoral researcher (Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie\/Onisilos programme) in the Department of History and Archaeology and the Department of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Cyprus. The Endangered Archives Programme (https:\/\/eap.bl.uk\/<\/a> ) is an international initiative of the British Library that supports the digitization of archives worldwide which are at risk of being destroyed or neglected.<\/p>\n

The research project Life Around the Courts will be carried out from July 2025 to December 2026 under the academic supervision of Dr. Stefanos Katsikas, Associate Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the University of Cyprus. It will be conducted in international collaboration with the SARD archive in Cairo. Dr. Mina Ibrahim and Ms. Yasmin Tarek from SARD will participate in this collaboration, contributing their expertise in the digitization and analysis of these historical records. The purpose of the project is to preserve and digitize 50 volumes of rare legal documents from Egyptian courts dating from 1910\u20131950.<\/p>\n

Through the documentation and analysis of court cases involving ordinary citizens of that era \u2013 including many members of Egypt\u2019s Greek community \u2013 the project aims to gain a deeper understanding of the public history of Egyptian society. It also seeks to highlight the country\u2019s multicultural and multireligious character. This international collaboration underscores the global nature of the initiative and the commitment of the University of Cyprus to preserving the world\u2019s cultural heritage.<\/p>\n
