The Schools as Living Labs (SALL) project is making waves in the education sector with its innovative Living Lab approach tailored for schools, resulting in the SALL roadmap. This user-driven innovation process aims to transform schools into Living Labs, involving students and local actors in collaborative projects to tackle real-life issues.

The four core elements of this approach are:

  1. Issue, addressing genuine problems relevant to participants’ experiences
  2. Solution, turning ideas into potential solutions
  3. Prototyping, immediately putting ideas in practice and testing them
  4. Co-creation, involving all impacted societal actors

The SALL project offers a fresh and engaging approach to education, empowering schools to navigate the evolving landscape of modern learning. Through Living Lab projects, students take the lead in science and innovation, collaborating with relevant societal actors to become agents of community well-being.

The SALL Toolbox

With ease of navigation in mind, The SALL Toolbox was created. The Toolbox is a valuable resource, which presents visually designed summaries, success stories, and best practices for implementing Living Lab-based open schooling activities. The Toolbox caters to different actors in education, including schools, teachers, societal actors, and policymakers, providing them with relevant information to drive successful initiatives.

The Toolbox is designed to help readers navigate a complex document by providing four distinct color-coded perspectives for different actors involved. Whether starting or continuing a Living Lab school project, the Toolbox empowers users to inform other potential actors and find all the necessary details for their project, making the exploration of SALL and Living Lab initiatives more accessible and rewarding.

Sustainability

This Toolkit was built with the idea of sustainability of the SALL principles in mind. Navigating project outcomes and how to use them can be a difficult thing, which is why this Toolkit has been constructed to easily guide specific users through the resources they would find the most useful.

As the SALL project nears the end of its funded lifecycle, it aims to sustain its impact beyond this stage. Co-created with school communities and actors across ten countries, the legacy of SALL will persist through its methodology and inspiring ideas. To ensure this, the project is leveraging two channels: the Community Platform, a digital hub for sharing and interacting with school-based living lab activities, and the OSTogether initiative, actively supported by SALL and other projects funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program.

By providing enriching teaching and learning experiences, the project paves the way for a promising future in education that responds to the changing needs of students and society.
