Challenges of Current Visual Storytelling: Approaches and Predicaments of Visualizing Conflict

Visual storytelling in the midst of sociopolitical polarisation and the ubiquity of the internet faces both daunting tasks and opportunities. In this era, where divergent perspectives often fuel divisive narratives, the power of images has the unique potential to cut through the noise and connect with audiences on a humanistic level. At the same time, the risk of oversimplification in pursuit of attention, the potential for narratives to be co-opted for biased agendas, and the challenge of ensuring accuracy in a socio-visual landscape prone to misinformation pose significant challenges. Can responsible image-based documentation and discerning consumption act as antidotes to misinformation, confirmation bias, emotional polarization, and short attention spans? How do these factors impact efforts to visualize conflict?
