Discussing the Fundamentals of Democracy

A timely discussion on the fundamentals of Democracy focusing on ‘The Rule of Law in a Democratic Society’, by Professor Paul Lemmens, former Judge at the European Court of Human Rights.

Court of Human Rights and Emeritus Professor at KU Leuven, gave a highly topical and insightful lecture on the Rule of Law in a Democratic Society. He discussed the fundamentals of democracy and how the European Court of Human Rights strives to strike the right balance among competing rights and principles. He focused on three main thematic sections pertaining to human rights, rule of law, and democracy in the framework of the Council of Europe, relevant ECtHR case law of the ECtHR, and erosion of the rule of law and human rights in the Council of Europe member States.

The lecture was organized in the framework of the Master Peace, Conflict, and Democracy with students’ active participation and as discussants, Associate Professors Kalliope Agapiou Josephides Associate and Aristoteles Constantinides from the Department of Social and Political Sciences and Law Department, respectively.
