What are the political challenges that arise when designing reception policies for refugees? How can we understand citizen and elite preferences regarding such policies, and how can we learn from the crises and counter crisis measures of the past? How do crises -and government led crisis response policies -shape the evolution of refugee reception and resettlement policies at the national and local level? In this talk, Prof. Fabbe will put these questions in historical perspective, drawing on over 20 years of research on questions of forced migration, identity politics and refugee reception in the Greece (and beyond). The talk will bring the discussion up to the contemporary period, using original data from a survey of local Greek officials and citizens, as well as qualitative insights gathered over 4-years spent following the trajectory oft Greece’s refugee first reception policies and their particular framings as “counter-crisis” measures.<\/p>\n
