Brief Description/Objective:
The project is integrated into the strategic plan for the transformation of the University Campus into a sustainable, smart city, capable of addressing future development challenges within a context of sustainability and flexibility.
The project’s objective is the development of the technological infrastructure for the future energy management system of the University of Cyprus Campus, utilizing technological advancements in the field of RES (Renewable Energy Sources) installation and smart energy management.
This innovative endeavor will incorporate active green energy production systems, energy-saving solutions, and information and communication technologies, while utilizing the expertise of the University’s academic and research community.
The overall objective of the Project is part of and serves the European and national goals for the green transition to RES towards a low-carbon economy and the increase of energy efficiency in public buildings.
Within the framework of the project, the following actions are planned to be implemented:
- Development of the first phase of the “Apollon” Photovoltaic Park, with a capacity of 5 MW, along with an energy storage system of 2.35 MWh
- Upgrade of Energy Center A’
- Upgrade of existing building energy management systems
- Supply and installation of smart energy meters and calorimeters across University’s buildings
- Supply and installation of an energy management system (supervision and control) and a meteorological station
Expected Benefits/Outcomes:
The Project is expected to bring many significant benefits both to the University of Cyprus itself and to the state. The benefits will extend to various areas such as the environment, the operating cost of the University and the upgrading of the services provided.
Specifically, the following outcomes are expected:
- Improvement of energy efficiency and increase the use of RES in public infrastructure.
- Reduction in energy consumption, leading to a decrease in operational costs for the University of Cyprus.
- Promotion of sustainable development and environmental protection.
- Creation of culture for new scientists regarding the application of new technologies in industry.
- Creation of a testbed for the development and testing of new technologies that can be applied across both public and private organizations in Cyprus.
- Upgrading of the services provided to students, academic and administrative staff and external partners of the University.
- Strengthened national and international recognition of the University, contributing to the attraction of exceptional students.
- Adoption of the “Campus as a Living Lab” approach, where “Research meets practice” to integrate academic and functional sustainability in addressing societal issues.
