Welcome to the website of the UNESCO Chair on Gender Equality
The Chair was established at the University of Cyprus in 2010, with the first holder being Professor Mary Koutselini (Professor Emerita). The aim of the Chair is, through its culturally diverse collaborative network, to propose and implement a new model for how common problems faced by the region's populations can be addressed through a gender perspective. To achieve its objectives, the Chair undertakes a system of research, training, information and documentation activities in the field of Gender Studies and gender interventions. As of October 2023, the Chair is co-directed by Associate Professors Alexia Panayiotou (Department of Business and Public Administration) and Miranda Christou (Department of Education).
"The UNESCO Chair, since its establishment around fifteen years ago, has made a significant contribution to changing attitudes towards gender. What it has mainly promoted is, through research and international partnerships, to raise awareness within the community about the problems that exist in gender equality and to offer more opportunities - especially to young girls - to work on gender equality matters and to claim their rights."
