VENUE

The University of Cyprus is proud to host the 13th ARLE Conference in June 2022 and we are looking forward to welcoming you to Nicosia.

With around 7.000 students, 113 laboratories and 830 faculty and staff members, the University of Cyprus (UCY) is a young and rapidly expanding university, which consists of 7 faculties, 22 departments and 16 research units/centres, and covers a broad spectrum within the life, social, natural and engineering sciences. UCY is considered the leading university and the most active research institution in Cyprus, and is currently ranked in the top 400 Universities in the world (World Universities Ranking – Times Higher Education).

UCY was established in 1989 and admitted its first students in 1992. It was founded in response to the growing intellectual needs of the Cypriot people, and is well placed to fulfil the numerous aspirations of the country. The University is a vigorous community of scholars engaged in the generation and diffusion of knowledge. Admission for the majority of undergraduate students is by entrance examinations organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus, and the competition for places is intense. A number of places are reserved for students with special needs or circumstances. Every effort is made to offer practical solutions to students facing specific problems, be it access to University facilities, or assistance on academic issues. UCY aims to establish itself as a Pioneer Research Institution achieving International Scientific Recognition in European Higher Education, offering Competitive Programmes and to become a Centre of Excellence in the wider Euro – Mediterranean Region. The main objectives of the University are the promotion of scholarship and education through teaching and research, and the enhancement of the cultural, social and economic development of Cyprus. In this context, the University believes that education must provide more than simply accumulation of knowledge. It must also encourage students’ active participation in the process of learning and acquisition of those values necessary for responsible involvement in the community. The University sets high standards for all branches of scholarship.

The main conference as well as the PhD Pre-Conference will take place at the New University Campus, which is located at the southeast of the city of Nicosia (full address: University of Cyprus, 1 Panepistimiou Anevue, 2109 Aglantzia, Nicosia).

The City of Nicosia

The University of Cyprus is located in Nicosia, the cosmopolitan and bustling capital of the Republic of Cyprus. The city of Nicosia uniquely blends the remnants of the medieval times with the contemporary business and commercial activity. The visitor can walk across the Venetian walls that once surrounded the ancient city, the Famagusta gate, the Pafos gate and the Kyrenia gate, while a wealth of galleries and museums mixes with the traditional shops in Laiki Geitonia and Ledra Street and the temple of Virgin Mary at Faneromeni.

Information concerning the history of Nicosia, its landmarks and places of interest (sights, museums, theatres, galleries, libraries, cultural centres, parks, markets, shopping streets), as well as tours and cycling routes can be found in the website of Nicosia Municipality: https://www.nicosia.org.cy/en-GB/home/.
