BStage’s Lecture at Tamasio Free University Marked a Great Success
October 23, 2025BStage at Tamasio Free University
Date: Tuesday, 14 October
Location: Tamasio Free University, Stavrou Stylianide Avenue 18, Episkopio 2642
The research project “Byzantines on Stage: Reimagining Byzantium in the Modern Greek Theatrical Production” (BStage) – co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the Republic of Cyprus through the Research and Innovation Foundation (Programme "Excellence Hubs": EXCELLENCE/0524/0251) – participates in the free universities co-organised by the University of Cyprus and a number of Cyprus municipalities with the lecture “Byzantines on Stage: Modern Greek Theatre with Byzantine Subjects”.
The lecture will be delivered at Tamasio Free University on Tuesday, 14 October by BStage’s Project Coordinator, Andria Andreou. It will explore the reception of Byzantium in the Greek theatre of the 19th and 20th c., seeking to address questions such as the following:
- which subjects and which Byzantine characters were preferred by theatrical authors?
- which goals did the choice of these subjects and characters serve?
- how popular were these theatrical works if we consider the number of attested performances?
- is Byzantium-themed theatre still interesting for contemporary audiences?
Free Universities seek to disseminate scientific research to the wider public, promoting lifelong learning and fostering social dialogue through lectures of broader interest.
The entrance to the event is free. A certificate of attendance is given to all participants attending all lectures.
